ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Thirteen students from the Habitat for Humanity
club at the SUNY College at Oneonta traveled to the Mississippi Gulf Coast
and assisted in rebuilding a home in the Biloxi in five days during their
recent winter break. The volunteers from SUNY Oneonta worked with about 30
other student volunteers from around the country to complete the project.
They handled a variety of construction activities, including siding,
painting, trim, framing, roofing, windows, and doors, while leaving the
plumbing and electrical work to professionals.
"It was amazing," said Nick Wilson, a member of the SUNY Oneonta Habitat
board. "We worked hard to build the house, but the inspiration of what we
were doing and the great people we were working with made it enjoyable."
"The pace of work was quick and we just jumped right it. We were given
instructions and then trusted to handle the task, which gave up a lot of
confidence," said SUNY Oneonta student Jillian Sakovits.
The SUNY Oneonta students developed many new skills, which they are eager
to demonstrate at local job sites.
The SUNY Oneonta Habitat for Humanity group hopes to undertake similar
projects in the future and to involve even more students.
