ONEONTA, N.Y. -- President Nancy Kleniewski is proud to announce that on Saturday, August 2, 2008 on the SUNY Oneonta campus, a small ceremony was held to confer the honorary doctorate of Humane Letters for Ms. Mia Hamm, world class athlete. At the request of Ms. Hamm a private ceremony was conducted to officially bestow the honorary degree.
SUNY Oneonta’s College Council Chair, Patrick Brown, and Council member, David Brenner, bestowed the award for the establishment of the Mia Hamm Foundation, http://www.miafoundation.org.
The state of New York had awarded Hamm’s degree in 2005, but because of her schedule and family commitments she was not able to return to Oneonta until this past Saturday when she was involved with the Soccer Hall of Fame Induction of her coach Ansance Dorrance. The Mia Hamm Foundation raises funds for bone marrow transplant patients and encourages girls’ and women’s development in sports.
Mia stated, “I feel honored for the award, but I don’t feel I’m doing anything special because I was taught by my family that people should live their lives by always giving back.”
