ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Civil rights activist Ann Atwater, whose
relationship with former klansman C.P. Ellis was chronicled in the
documentary "An Unlikely Friendship," will appear at the SUNY College at
Oneonta on Thursday, September 3, to lead a discussion in conjunction with a
screening of the film. The event will take place at 3 p.m. in the Craven
Lounge of the Morris Conference Center on campus. Admission is
complimentary, and members of the community are invited to participate.
Atwater and Ellis first met in Durham, North Carolina, in 1971 at a forum
on the integration of Durham’s schools. Atwater was a community organizer
and Ellis the Exalted Cyclops of the Durham Ku Klux Klan. Unexpectedly, the
two discovered common ground and formed an alliance that led to a life-long
friendship. Their story was made into a documentary by filmmaker Diane
Bloom.
Atwater’s appearance at SUNY Oneonta is sponsored by the Office of Equity
and Inclusion. More information about the event is available from Dr. B.
Cecilia Zapata, Director of the Office of Equity and Inclusion, at (607)
