ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Fraternities and sororities at the SUNY College at
Oneonta performed more hours of community service in the fall 2008 semester
than in any semester in the past, according to Jason Corrigan, the Community
Service Chair of the
Inter-Greek
Council at the College. The fraternities and sororities combined to
perform over 8,500 of service last semester, compared to approximately 3,000
hours in the 2007-08 academic year.
The Greek-letter organizations raised over $10,000 for the St. Jude
Children's Research Hospital through a letter-writing campaign in which all
of the organizations participated. Each fraternity and sorority also
participated in Shoeboxes For Soldiers, assembling boxes of gifts that were
sent to soldiers overseas. Through a Thanksgiving Food Drive, each
organization collected canned goods that were donated to the United
Methodist Church.
The local National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk, which was organized by
the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority, raised over $17,000 for the foundation. The
Chi Phi fraternity conducted a 9/11 Candle Ceremony that was attended by
over 300 participants from the College and the community.
The SUNY Oneonta Inter-Greek Council is actively seeking other meaningful
service opportunities to help build their relationship with the local
community. More information is available from Jason Corrigan at (518)
