ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Last November, students in Sheila Serbay's
Psychology of Adulthood and Aging class at the SUNY College of Oneonta
launched a month-long food drive to help local senior citizens avoid having
to choose between purchasing food or fuel this winter. Just before
Christmas, the students provided 14 senior households with food that should
last them approximately three months.
"The generosity from the College community and local businesses was
incredible," remarked Ms. Serbay. "We could not believe how much we had
collected."
The 14 families received perishable and non-perishable items with a small
amount of cash for future purchases of milk or bread. Restaurant-size cans
of food were also donated to Saturday's Bread.
The committee of SUNY Oneonta students who coordinated the Food vs. Fuel
Project included Dominique Canton, Megan Dorak, Elyise Hallenbeck, Sinead
Lynch, Amanda Maiorano, Amanda Richards, and Ashlie Van Duzer.
Local businesses and organizations that supported the effort included
Certified Auto Outlet, Corning, Inc., Damascene Book Cellar, Go Wireless,
Law Offices of Richard Rothermel, L. Grummons Funeral Home, M. Serbay
Plumbing & Heating, Northrup's Supply (R. Webster), Oneonta Marketing Club,
Personal Computer Services, Psi Chi Honorary Society, Rentals for Everyone,
Sodexo Foods, and United Student Rentals.
The Oneonta branch of the Office of the Aging assisted in identifying and
delivering food to the seniors. Mandy Rogers, site supervisor, maintained
the seniors' privacy while personally delivering boxes with her staff.
