ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Students in Sheila Serbay's Psychology of Adulthood
and Aging class at the SUNY College of Oneonta have launched a month-long
food drive to help local senior citizens avoid having to choose between
purchasing food or fuel this winter.
After learning of the difficult choices that some senior citizens face, the
students started the Food vs. Fuel Project with support from Ms. Serbay.
"The proceeds of this project will not solve all financial problems
seniors encounter, but it certainly cannot hurt. The efforts also give
students the very important feelings of community and sharing. I am as
excited as the students," remarked Ms. Serbay.
The food-drive committee is requesting specific non-perishable items in
order to keep the contents of baskets as uniform as possible. The requested
items include hearty soups, small tea or coffee, condensed milk, powdered
milk, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, small cans of vegetables, canned tuna,
mayonnaise, mustard, rice, variety packs of cereals, sugar, one-pound canned
hams, Vienna sausage, small jar/portions of applesauce, and instant
potatoes.
The committee of students from the SUNY Oneonta
Psychology Department
includes Dominique Canton, Megan Dorak, Elyise Hallenbeck, Sinead Lynch,
Amanda Maiorano, Amanda Richards, and Ashlie VanDuzer. Ms. Serbay and the
committee members will visit local businesses to solicit donations from
October 14 to November 20. Cash donations will be used to purchase
perishable items that will be included in each basket.
