ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Nearly 30 students and two faculty members from the SUNY College of
Oneonta have launched a two-month drive to help local senior citizens avoid
having to choose between purchasing food or fuel this winter.
Through November 30, students will collect non-perishable food items,
such as hearty canned soups, tuna, pasta, peanut butter, and vegetables, as
well as monetary donations. The money will be used to purchase perishable
items such as milk, eggs, butter, and bread just prior to delivery.
Collection boxes for donations of food will be available in the lobbies of
Fitzelle Hall and the Netzer Administration Building. Monetary contributions
can be sent to
Sheila Serbay of the
Psychology Department in room 111B of Fitzelle Hall.
In addition to the collection boxes, students will visit local vendors
and hold bake sales to raise money for the project.
Now in its second year, the project is coordinated by Ms. Serbay, who has
been joined in the effort by
Dr. Lisa Curch of the
Sociology Department.
Last year just before Christmas, the project provided 14 senior households
with food that lasted them approximately three months.
More information about the Food vs. Fuel Project is available from Sheila
Serbay at (607) 436-2674.
