AWARD-WINNING FILMMAKER TO SHOW PAPER CLIPS AT SUNY-ONEONTA

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Joe Fab, the award-winning documentary filmmaker, writer, and co-director of Paper Clips, will present a public screening of his film at the SUNY College at Oneonta at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 29, in the Red Dragon Theatre of the Hunt College Union. Admission to the event is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.

Paper Clips is an inspiring documentary film that captures how students at the Whitwell Middle School in rural Tennessee responded to lessons about the Holocaust by collecting one paper clip to honor each individual put to death by the Nazis. The result was a memorial railcar filled with 11 million paper clips--representing six million Jews and five million gypsies, homosexuals, and other victims of the Holocaust--which now stands permanently in their schoolyard.

Paper Clips was released in theaters internationally, on HBO, and on home video. In addition to many film festival awards, Paper Clips was named one of the top five documentaries of 2004 by the National Board of Review and received the Jewish Image Award in recognition of its promotion of cross-cultural communication.

During his visit to SUNY-Oneonta, Joe Fab will also speak with students in education, history, and film classes at the College and present a workshop for area teachers through the Catskill Regional Teacher Center.

Fab, the Vice President of The Johnson Group, is an award-winning producer and writer with more than 30 years experience in film and video production, media and communications, event production, and the live presentation of plays and music. He has worked with Presidents Clinton, Carter, and George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush, as well as an array of other prominent political figures. He recently produced the premiere presentation of a new poem by Maya Angelou, performed by the author herself. He has written for such diverse actors as Gregory Peck, Mary Steenburgen, Shirley Jones, Robert Prosky, and Alan Alda, and personalities including Mary Matalin, James Carville, Willard Scott, and Al Roker. As a producer, he has presented scores of entertainers, including such artists as Tony Bennett, Tina Turner, Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, Cher, Charlotte Church, Marty Stuart, Wayne Newton, Boy George and Culture Club, Jose Feliciano, LeAnn Rimes, and Karen Akers.

Each year, Fab produces and writes the opening ceremonies for the annual Christmas Pageant of Peace, featuring an hour of entertainment by internationally known performers and the lighting of the national Christmas tree by the President of the United States. The event is broadcast live via satellite and seen around the world. His recent television productions include programs for the Discovery Channel and the History Channel, as well as the NBA-focused documentary "Crossover," which he executive-produced for Showtime in conjunction with Penny Marshall and Magic Johnson.
