ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Several faculty members and students from the
Earth Sciences Department
of the SUNY College at Oneonta have been selected as presenters at the 2009
annual meeting of the Geological Society of America on October 18-21 in
Portland, Oregon. Their presentations were selected from over 4,000
abstracts submitted by potential presenters for the conference, which is
entitled "From Volcanoes to Vineyards: Living with Dynamic Landscapes."
Faculty members
Devin Castendyk,
Leslie Hasbargen,
Tatiana Vislova,
James Albanese, and
James Ebert will present "GEO FYRST: Creating Majors with a Pre-semester
Field Trip for First-year Students," a paper discussing the department’s
five-day, pre-semester field trip for incoming students at SUNY Oneonta.
Dr. Hasbargen will present a poster session based on research he
conducted about the stratigraphy of a floodplain at Pine Lake with
Cynthia Klink
of the Anthropology
Department at SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College,
Renee Walker
of the SUNY Oneonta Anthropology Department, and SUNY Oneonta student Emmon
Johnson in a presentation entitled "Combining Archaeology, Sedimentology,
and GPR Stratigraphy to Elucidate Floodplain Development, Charlotte Creek,
NY."
SUNY Oneonta student Christopher Kakolewski and Dr. Hasbargen will
present a poster session entitled "Late Glacial and Holocene Alluvial Fans
in Butternut Valley, Upstate New York" regarding their research on the fans’
stratigraphy and the nature of contacts between fans.
