ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Students in the
"Issues and Advocacy in Early Childhood" class of Associate
Professor of Education Suzanne Miller at the SUNY College at Oneonta
have joined the fight against global poverty. Their efforts range
from raising funds for UNICEF to volunteering at local
organizations.
On Saturday, October 13, students from the class will participate
in the Oneonta Farmer's Market on Main Street, where they will
collect funds for UNICEF and gather signatures for a petition to be
sent to Congress in support of the Global Poverty Act of 2007. The
proposed bill promotes the reduction of global poverty, the
elimination of extreme global poverty, and the achievement of the
United Nations Millennium Development Goal of reducing by 50% the
number of people worldwide who live on less than $1 per day.
On October 16, 17, and 24, the students will set up tables in the
SUNY-Oneonta campus quad to continue their efforts. The displays
will include posters created by Professor Miller and Professor
Emeritus Walter vom Saal related to the United Nations Millennium
Development Goals. The posters were displayed in the Wilber Bank
window on Main Street in Oneonta last spring.
Locally, students from the class are planning a service-learning
project in support of the Family Service Association. A group of
students from the class will volunteer at Saturday's Bread on
October 20. Several students will also collect funds for UNICEF in
addition to the collections at the tables.
More information on the advocacy and service-learning projects is
available from Dr. Suzanne Miller of the SUNY-Oneonta
Department of
Elementary Education and Reading at (607) 436-3194.
