ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Dr.
Troy Duster,
Director of the Institute for the History of the Production of Knowledge and
Professor of Sociology at New York University, will offer a presentation on
"Diversity Stages and Coalition Building among Campus Constituencies" on
Tuesday, February 10, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Craven Lounge of the
Morris Conference Center at the SUNY College at Oneonta. Admission to the
event is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.
In addition to his work at NYU, Dr. Duster is a Chancellor's Professor at
the University of California, Berkeley. He is the former Director of the
American Cultures Center and founding Director of the Institute for the
Study of Social Change, both at the University of California, Berkeley. He
has been a mentor to students and colleagues and a consistent voice in the
recruitment and retention of social identity groups that have not been an
integral part of higher education.
Dr. Duster has been a member of the Assembly of Behavioral and Social
Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences; the Committee on Social and
Ethical Impacts of Advances in Biomedicine, Institute of Medicine; the
Special Commission of the Association of American Law Schools; the
Commission on Meeting the Challenges of Diversity in an Academic Democracy;
and the Science Advisory Panel, National Institutes of Health, Research, on
Violence. He has served as President of the American Sociological
Association and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Social Science
Research Council.
Dr. Duster's books and monographs include The Legislation of Morality,
Aims and Control of the Universities, Cultural Perspectives on
Biological Knowledge, Backdoor to Eugenics, and Whitewashing
Race: The Myth of a Colorblind Society.
