ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Professor
Janet Nepkie of the
Music Department of the SUNY College at Oneonta has been promoted to
SUNY Distinguished Service Professor, the highest faculty rank in SUNY.
A leader in faculty governance at the College and SUNY-wide, Dr. Nepkie has
served as Chair of SUNY-Oneonta's College Senate, Chair of the Music
Department, Coordinator of Music Industry Internships, a leader of the
department's successful efforts to obtain accreditation from the National
Association of Schools of Music, developer of the College's international
exchange program agreement with Kalmus University in Sweden, Co-Chair of the
SUNY Celebration of the Arts, and Chair of the University Faculty Senate
Undergraduate Academic Program and Policies Committee.
A member of the SUNY-Oneonta Music Department faculty since 1970, Dr. Nepkie
developed the College's distinctive Music Industry program, which now has
over 650 majors.
An accomplished musician who has performed as principal cellist for
the Catskill Symphony, Utica Symphony, and Glimmerglass Opera, Dr.
Nepkie served for five years as President of the national Music and
Entertainment Industry Educators Association, organized four conferences
on Academic Intellectual Property, taught a distance-learning course on
Copyright for Higher Education, served as a trustee of the Copyright
Society of the USA, and chaired the United University Professions
Technology Issues Committee. She holds a doctorate from New York
University.
With the promotion of Dr. Nepkie, four SUNY-Oneonta faculty members have
now been designated as Distinguished Service Professors and twelve as
Distinguished Teaching Professors.
Candidates for SUNY Distinguished Professorships are nominated by the
students and faculty of their local campus, evaluated by a SUNY advisory
committee, and recommended to the SUNY Chancellor, who presents the
finalists to the Board of Trustees for approval. The rank of
Distinguished Professor, the highest in SUNY, is conferred only to
faculty members who demonstrate outstanding abilities in their teaching
or service.
