ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Hewitt Pantaleoni Memorial Concert Series at
the SUNY College at Oneonta will present the third annual Jazz Composers &
Improvisors Project in a concert in the Sanford Auditorium of the
Instructional Resources Center on Tuesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. Admission
to the event is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to
attend.
The concert will feature new compositions by bassist John Davey, tenor
saxophonist Jonathan Lorentz, guitarist Dan Muniz, and drummer Sadiq
Abdushahid.
John Davey has recently released a new CD entitled "You Are Here" with
his world music/jazz trio GlobeTrotting. He released "Sound Bites," his
first CD as a leader, in 2005. His chamber-jazz string trio From The Bridge
released their debut CD, "9 views," in 2001. All three recordings were
funded in part by grants from the New York State Council of the Arts and the
State University of New York. Davey, who is coordinating the concert,
teaches jazz bass at SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College.
Jonathan Lorentz is a saxophonist, vocalist, composer, arranger, and
educator. His music combines elements of jazz, blues, and the avant-garde.
Lorentz has performed at Radio City Music Hall, CBGB's, The Bitter End, Blue
Note, Smalls, and the Cutting Room. His releases include "Connect" (2002)
and "Coming Home" (2006). He recently placed first in the New York
University Jazz Trio Competition. Lorentz, who recently earned his
doctorate, has served on the faculties of New York University, Marymount
Manhattan College, Yeshiva University, Adirondack Community College, and in
the Vermont State College system.
Dan Muniz is a 2007 graduate of the music program at SUNY Oneonta. He is
currently finishing his master's degree at Queens College. A guitar player,
he is an original member of the John Davey Quartet, and he has performed
throughout central New York.
Sadiq Abdushahid has performed with a who's who in the music business,
from Marvin Gaye to Ornette Coleman. He has recently worked with New York
City veteran jazz trumpeters Roy Campbell and Shunzo Ono.
The Jazz Composers & Improvisors Project is co-sponsored by the SUNY
Oneonta Music Department,
