ONEONTA, N.Y. -- SUNY Oneonta’s poetry slam team finished 12th in the nation at the 11th annual College Union Poetry Slam Invitational held on April 6-9 at the University of Michigan. The team, consisting of Vanessa Perillo, Mary Taibi, Maryanne Rojas, Kristen Tomanocy, Anny Miner and Jessica Bailey, narrowly missed earning a semi-final bid, and bested the University of California-Berkeley, Brown University, Brandeis University, the University of Pennsylvania, Middlebury College, the University of Washington and The Ohio State University, among others.

SUNY Oneonta’s slammers were selected for the prestigious Group Piece Showcase, performing “ex-girlfriend.” Mary Taibi was honored as Best of the Rest and performed during the national championship finals.

This is the 10th consecutive year that SUNY Oneonta has participated in the annual national poetry month tournament sponsored by the Association of College Unions Poetry Slam International. The college’s team has made the semifinals five times and has made three finals stage appearances, earning the silver medal at the 2005 tournament.
