ONEONTA, N.Y. -- New freshmen
arriving at the SUNY College at Oneonta this semester will have
opportunities to volunteer in the community within a day of their
arrival on campus through two programs organized by the College's
Center for Social
Responsibility and Community.
On Monday, August 27, approximately 90 new freshmen are expected
to perform about 450 hours of volunteer service for eight nonprofit
organizations in the City of Oneonta as part of the College's second
annual Freshmen Service Day. The students will help with a variety
of jobs such as painting, cleaning playground equipment, staining
benches, doing yard work, and assisting with the food bank. They
will work at the local Head Start, Opportunities for Otsego,
Community Connections, Susquehanna Greenway, Oneonta Nursery School,
Oneonta YMCA, Bugbee Children's Center, and SUNY-Oneonta
College Camp.
SUNY-Oneonta freshmen will also participate in "Leap into
Service," a project sponsored by the SUNY-Oneonta
AmeriCorps program. New freshmen participating in "Leap into
Service" will arrive on campus with a backpack full of school
supplies to be donated to the Family Services Association, which in
turn will provide them to area children.
Both programs are designed to introduce new SUNY-Oneonta students
to the spirit of volunteering, to volunteer opportunities on campus
and in the community, and to the College's commitment to service.
More information about the programs is available from Linda
Drake, Director of the SUNY-Oneonta Center for Social Responsibility
and Community, at (607) 436-2633.
