VOLUNTEERISM CONFERENCE SET FOR
NOVEMBER 1 AT SUNY ONEONTA
 

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Center for Social Responsibility and Community of the SUNY College at Oneonta will present its eighth annual Volunteerism and Social Responsibility conference from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, in the Morris Conference Center on campus. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., and participants in the conference will receive a complimentary lunch and a t-shirt. Admission to the conference is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to participate.

Designed to inspire participants to make a difference in their communities, the conference will open with a keynote address featuring Dr. Ashok Malhotra, Distinguished Teaching Professor in the SUNY Oneonta Department of Philosophy, who will present "To Find Yourself Is to Lose Yourself in the Service of Others."

Following Dr. Malhotra's presentation, conference attendees may choose from among the following workshops:

  • "Cow Poop Makes Things Beautiful: A Natural Guide to Turning Weakness into Strengths," Christian Vesterfelt, SUNY Delhi
  • "Here I Stand," Tanya Henderson and Dale Capristo, SUNY Oneonta
  • "Confidence," John Henry Young, Oneonta Job Corps Academy
  • "Students' Alternative Voice: The Dangers of Not Voting," Thor Kasenko, SUNY Oneonta
  • "Creating a Lasting Community Service Project," Charlotte McKane, Oneonta High School
  • "Building Character Brick by Brick," Linda Drake, SUNY Oneonta

The conference on Volunteerism and Social Responsibility is co-sponsored by SUNY Oneonta and its Center for Social Responsibility and Community, SUNY Delhi and its O'Connor Center for Community Service, and the Oneonta Job Corps Academy.
