ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The
Division of Education at the SUNY College at Oneonta has entered into a
unique college partnership program with Bensonhurst elementary school PS 247
in Brooklyn. The program is designed to provide the school's students with
information and a connection to SUNY Oneonta to help them learn about the
college experience. For SUNY Oneonta, the partnership will provide
opportunities for Education majors to gain experience in working with
elementary students.
The partnership between SUNY Oneonta and the school is being coordinated
by Dr. Dennis Banks, Chair of the College's
Secondary Education
Department.
PS 247 Principal Christopher Ogno developed the program in collaboration
with Ivy Cohen Corporate Communications with support from the non-profit
organization PENCIL.
Through the College Partnership Program, PS 247 students will participate
in a field trip to SUNY Oneonta, and SUNY Oneonta representatives will visit
their partner classroom to conduct seminars, engage students in educational
activities, or share personal experiences with them. A PS 247 Parent College
Resource Center will provide parents information about college admissions,
programs, and financial aid.
PS 247 enrolls 684 children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade with
75% of the students coming from families whose incomes are below the poverty
line. Less than 50% of the students come from English-speaking families, and
21 languages are represented in the school's population.
More information about the PS 247 College Partnership Program is
available from Dr. Banks at (607) 436-3075.
