ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Carmelita Tropicana, the stage character created by
Cuban-born writer and performer Alina Troyano, will appear in the Center for
Multicultural Experiences in Lee Hall at the SUNY College at Oneonta at 7
p.m. on Monday, November 10. Admission to the event, entitled "Carmelita
Tropicana: Performing Between Cultures," is complimentary, and members of
the community are invited to attend.
Carmelita Tropicana (Alina Troyano) received an Obie for Sustained
Excellence in Performance in 1999. Her book, I, Carmelita
Tropicana–Performing Between Cultures, offers the first comprehensive
collection of her work, including "Memories of the Revolution, a play
co-written with long-time collaborator and director Uzi Parnes; "Your Kunst
is Your Waffen," a film script written with director Ela Troyano that won
the Berlin Film Festival in 1994; and the science fiction play "Chicas
2000."
"Milk of Amnesia," her most anthologized solo, was presented at Yale
University in 2007 and was part of El Museo del Barrio's Exhibit, "Arte No
Es Vida 2008." "With What Ass Does the Cockroach Sit?" directed by David
Schweizer, was produced by the International Arts Relations (INTAR) Theater
in 2004 and presented at Northwestern University in 2008. Her collaboration
with Marga Gomez directed by David Schweizer, "Single Wet Female," was
nominated for a GLAAD award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation.
Alina Troyano has received a number of awards and fellowships, including
the Anonymous Was a Woman Award, the Cuban Arts Foundation fellowship, the
Mark Taper Forum's Latino Initiative fellowship, the CINTAS Foundation
fellowship, and fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts for
screenwriting/playwriting and for performance art. Her work has been
supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Jerome Foundation,
Latino Public Broadcasting, and Independent Television Services. She serves
as Associate Artistic Director of the INTAR Theater and on the Board of
Directors of the not-for-profit arts center Performance Space 122.
