THREE FROM SUNY-ONEONTA TO RECEIVE CHANCELLOR'S AWARDS
 

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Two faculty and a staff member from the SUNY College at Oneonta have been named as recipients of the 2007 SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence. Professor David Manes of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics will receive the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Assistant Professor Orlando Legname of the Music Department will receive the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. Director of Admissions Karen Brown will receive the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

A member of the SUNY-Oneonta faculty since 1965, Professor Manes holds a bachelor's degree from Washington and Jefferson College, a master's from Florida State University, and a doctorate from Penn State. He was selected as the 2001 winner of the Distinguished Teaching Award of the Mathematical Association of America Seaway Section and as a nominee for the national Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. His teaching and research interests include combinatorics, number theory, field theory and polynomials, and group theory and generalizations.

A member of the College at Oneonta faculty since 2000, Orlando Legname holds a doctorate in composition from the University of Maryland. A composer, conductor, and theorist, he taught previously at the State University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, the University of Maryland, and New York University. He has also served as assistant conductor of the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble. In 2003, Dr. Legname was honored with the College's annual Award for Innovative Uses of Instructional Technology. In 2006, he was named the recipient of a faculty fellowship from the College's Teaching Learning and Technology Center.

Karen Brown holds a bachelor's degree in business economics from SUNY-Oneonta and a master's in higher education administration from New York University. A member of the College's professional staff since 1992, she worked as assistant, associate, and interim Director of Admissions before being appointed to her current position in 2000. She played a key role in developing the undergraduate admissions initiatives that have helped to establish SUNY-Oneonta as a highly selective college. Karen Brown has held leadership positions in SUNY, state, and national organizations for admissions professionals.

The SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence will be presented at the College's Commencement on Saturday, May 19.
