ONEONTA, N.Y. -- One member of the faculty, one member of the professional staff, and one member of the classified staff from the SUNY College at Oneonta have been named as recipients of the 2010 SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence. Dr. Cynthia Lassonde, Associate Professor of Education, will receive the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching; Dr. Mark Rice, Director of Counseling, will receive the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service; and Mr. Dale Couse, Chief Janitor, will receive the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service.
A member of the SUNY Oneonta faculty since 2003, Cynthia Lassonde holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University at Albany. At SUNY Oneonta, she teaches core literacy courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Beyond the classroom, she has written four books, edited six others, and contributed many articles to scholarly books and journals. She served for three years as chair of the College’s Celebration of Teaching conference. Before joining the College, she served for 20 years as a pre-school and elementary teacher.
Mark Rice joined the SUNY Oneonta professional staff as a counselor in the Counseling Center in 2000 and was promoted to Director of Counseling in 2002. He has introduced a number of innovative programs at SUNY Oneonta that have increased use of the Counseling Center. A licensed psychologist in the State of New York, he holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Duquesne University. Prior to joining SUNY Oneonta, he worked in a variety of settings, including outpatient substance abuse, community mental health, and private practice.
Dale Couse joined the SUNY Oneonta classified staff in 1983. He is the chief administrator of the Custodial Department, coordinating a staff of six supervising janitors and more than 100 janitors and cleaners. In that role, he is responsible for upkeep of campus buildings, snow removal, installation of office furniture, and set up of campus events. He has coordinated set-ups for the College’s Commencement, the Annual Daily Star Cook-off, concerts in the Alumni Field House, charity fund-raisers, and many other campus events.
The 2010 SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence will be presented at the College’s Commencement on Saturday, May 22.
