ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Dr. Jacqueline Bennett, Assistant Professor in the
Department of
Chemistry and Biochemistry at the SUNY College at Oneonta, has received
a grant from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation's Special Grant
Program in the Chemical Sciences for a project entitled "Integrating
Photochemistry into the Undergraduate Chemistry Curriculum." The Dreyfus
Grant Program provides support to institutions for projects that advance the
science of chemistry in innovative ways.
Dr. Bennett plans to develop and implement "green" photochemistry
experiments to use in labs in the College's organic chemistry courses to
examine the effect of radiant energy in producing chemical changes. As
"green" experiments, they will reduce or eliminate the use and generation of
hazardous substances. Dr. Bennett's inquiry-based experiments will be modern
and relevant and will introduce students to the use of an energy source
other than heat.
Dr. Bennett joined the SUNY-Oneonta faculty in 2006. She holds a
doctorate in chemistry from the University of California, Riverside. Before
joining the College, she taught chemistry at Drury University.
