ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Assistant Professor
William
Ashbaugh, chair of the
History Department
at the SUNY College at Oneonta, is the author of the extensive section on
East Asia in the three-volume Greenwood Encyclopedia of Global and
Medieval Life and Culture, which was released recently by Greenwood
Press.
The encyclopedia offers in-depth essays on broad themes, short entries on
specific topics, and carefully selected primary documents to help readers
more fully understand medieval life and culture from the year 400 to the
year 1400.
Dr. Ashbaugh worked on the encyclopedia from April 2006 through August
2008. He wrote approximately 100,000 words for his section, which comprises
over 160 pages of the volume on Asia and Oceania. His material focuses on
China, Japan, and Korea. His early work on religion and history was drawn in
part from his teaching of The History of Asia to 1500, a course that he
developed at SUNY Oneonta.
A recipient of the 2008 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in
Teaching, William Ashbaugh joined the SUNY Oneonta faculty in 2001. He holds
a doctorate in history from Temple University and a master's in Asian
history from San Diego State University. He taught previously at San Diego
State, California State at San Marcos, Drexel, and Penn State. At SUNY
Oneonta, Dr. Ashbaugh has developed and taught history courses on Japan,
China, India, and American foreign policy, and he teaches courses on World
War II and the Cold War.
