SUNY ONEONTA LIBRARY TO HOST RECEPTION FOR ARTISTS FRECKELTON AND BEAL

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Artists Jack Beal and Sondra Freckelton will be the guests of the SUNY College at Oneonta at a reception in their honor on the first floor of the Milne Library from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 23. Members of the community are invited to attend the reception to meet the artists, see their work, and share refreshments. Admission to the event is complimentary.

Two paintings by the nationally known artists now hang in the first floor reference area of Milne Library. One is an oil painting by Jack Beal entitled "Jack's Equipment," which was donated by Elise and Jerry Pustilnik. The second is a watercolor painting by Sondra Freckelton, donated by Ms. Freckelton, entitled "Bedtime Still Life." Mr. Beal and Ms. Freckelton live and work in Delaware County, and both hold honorary SUNY doctorates that were presented at the SUNY Oneonta commencement in 2007.

Sondra Freckelton distinguished herself as an artist, a teacher, and an advocate for art, winning acclaim at the local, national, and international levels for her work. After her early abstract sculptures in wood and plastic, Ms. Freckelton helped lead the artistic community towards the "New Realism" through her transparent watercolors and her meticulously colored screen prints. Her work has been shown in solo exhibits in many major galleries and appeared at the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institute.

Jack Beal has distinguished himself as an artist, a teacher, and an advocate for art, helping to pioneer the school of "New Realism" in American art through his narrative paintings derived from direct observation and characterized by fluid brush-strokes. Mr. Beal's paintings, murals, and draftsmanship distinguished him as an important artist. His art has been featured in many solo and group exhibitions as well as in major public collections. His work is represented in such prestigious venues as the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
