ONEONTA, N.Y. -- "Supernatural," an exhibit by Utica artist Tom
Mazzullo, and "Echoes From the Past," featuring the works of SUNY Oneonta
Associate Professor of Art Thomas Sakoulas, will open in the
Fine Arts
galleries of the SUNY College at Oneonta in early September. The
galleries will host a reception for both artists on Thursday, September 11,
from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., which will be preceded by an artist's talk by Mr.
Mazzullo. Admission to all of the events is complimentary, and members of
the community are invited to attend.
"Supernatural," which runs from Tuesday, September 2, to Friday, October
3, in the New Gallery, features 28 of Mazzullo's silverpoint drawings, two
brasspoint drawings, three pastels, and four watercolors. Silverpoint is a
medieval medium rarely practiced today. Somewhat resembling a graphite
drawing, a drawing done in silver begins to tarnish after a few years, and
the dull gray lines take on a warm, brown hue. Silverpoint drawings are done
on paper coated with a slightly abrasive paint so that the metal rubs off
onto the surface and makes pale, fine lines.
The title of the exhibition, "Supernatural," is derived from Mazzullo's
belief that "Drawing is the primary means by which an artist turns nothing
into something."
"Echoes From the Past," which runs from Monday, September 8, to Saturday,
October 18, in the Martin-Mullen Art Gallery, features 23 of Sakoulas'
relief sculptures carved in bluestone, two soapstone carvings, several sheet
metal sculptures, a number of large-formatted drawings, and an original
lithograph. Sakoulas' interest in elemental geometric forms is expressed on
local bluestone, worked with traditional Mediterranean stone carving
processes, and on the surface of modern Lexan sheets.
The title of the exhibition, "Echoes from the Past," refers to Sakoulas'
extensive interest in and investigation of ancient Greek art. "In a sense,"
says Sakoulas, "the work in this exhibition echoes visual signs across the
span of a few millennia of time and a few thousand kilometers of space."
Sakoulas will present an artist's talk about his work later in the fall
semester. Both artists will be present at the reception, which is sponsored
by the College's Alumni Association.
Under the direction of Tim Sheesley, the SUNY-Oneonta art galleries are
open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. when the College is in
session. More information about the exhibitions or the galleries is
