ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Filmmaker John
Miglietta will show and discuss his documentary "Just Around the
Corner," a film about peak oil and global warming, at 7 p.m. on
Tuesday, October 9, in the Hamblin Theater of the Fine Arts Building
at the SUNY College at Oneonta. The movie and gallery discussion is
offered in conjunction with the conclusion of the exhibit "The Sixth
Extinction," which is currently featured in the College's New
Gallery. Admission to the exhibit and the movie is complimentary,
and members of the community are invited to attend.
"Just Around the Corner," a feature-length documentary, explores
the predictions about the state of the world's environment and what
the future might look like. Focusing on two of the greatest issues
of the day, peak oil and global warming, the film follows a small
group of high school students from Oneonta and another group from
New York City as they visit public officials, writers, scientists,
and grass-roots activists to discuss environmental issues.
The companion exhibit, "The Sixth Extinction," features Cynthia
Marsh's stunning collection of NASA images taken from one of five
Earth-observing instruments programmed to obtain high-resolution
images of the entire land surface of the planet. The images combine
unexpected beauty with an insight into humanity's impact on the
planet. As another component of the exhibit, David Kenny and Michael
Wyshock display "Window Vision," a video installation of natural
environments highlighting the distinction between animal-to-earth
and human-to-earth adaptations.
Under the direction of Tim Sheesley, the
SUNY-Oneonta galleries are open Monday through Friday from 11
a.m. to 5 p.m. when the College is in session. More information
about the movie, exhibit, or galleries is available from Sheesley at
(607) 436-2445.
