ONEONTA, N.Y. -- "The Life of the Poet," an exhibit by artist
Patricia Engel LaFata, and "tech-no-tech," an invitational exhibition by six
artists, will open in the
Fine Arts
galleries of the SUNY College at Oneonta this month. LaFata will present
a gallery talk about her work on Thursday, January 29, at 4 p.m., which will
be followed by a double reception for the exhibitions from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Admission to all of the events is complimentary, and members of the
community are invited to attend.
From Tuesday, January 20, through Friday, February 20, Patricia Engel
LaFata's work will be featured in the Project Space Gallery (formerly the
New Gallery). LaFata is a mixed media sculptor who creates anthropomorphic,
visionary, totemic objects using a variety of materials and techniques. Born
and raised in Toledo, Ohio, she lived in New York City, Munich, and East
Hampton for many years before marrying in 2004 and moving to central New
York.
From Monday, January 26, through Thursday, March 19, the Martin-Mullen
Art Gallery will feature "tech-no-tech" with works by Kathleen Brandt, R.
Luke DuBois, John Knecht, Carey E. McDougall, Barbara Roux, and Björn
Schülke. Each artist will contribute an installation of work involving a
range of technical and non-technical creations communicating social,
political, and environmental concepts. The works of international artists
DuBois and Schülke are on loan from the bitforms gallery in New York City,
and the other works are on loan from the artists. The works include
natural-found materials, hand-fabricated fiber sculpture, miniature solar
machines, interactive multi-screen video digital drawings, compressed audio
and video of American pop culture, and drawings.
The double reception for the exhibitions is sponsored in part by the SUNY
Oneonta Alumni Association.
Under the direction of Tim Sheesley, the SUNY Oneonta art galleries are
open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. when the College is in
session. More information about the exhibitions or the galleries is
