ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Two exhibits will open in the
Fine Arts
Galleries of the SUNY College at Oneonta this month. Beginning on
Monday, January 14, and continuing through Friday, February 1, the New
Gallery will feature paintings and drawings by artist Wayne Claypatch in an
exhibit entitled "I Should Have Seen It Coming." Starting on Monday, January
21, and continuing through Friday, March 7, the Main Gallery will feature
the work of several artists in an exhibit entitled "Outrageous Pages:
Ingenious Artists' Books." Admission to the galleries and to related events
is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.
Wayne Claypatch, who maintains a studio in Owego and teaches drawing at
Broome Community College, will present a gallery talk on Thursday, January
17, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. An artist's reception will follow from 5 p.m.
to 7 p.m.
Claypatch holds an MA and BFA from St. Cloud State University. His work
is imaginative figuration with references to popular culture from the 1960s
through the present. His paintings are colorful and expressive and his
drawings rich and well crafted.
"Outrageous Pages: Ingenious Artists' Books" will feature books by over
30 artists from Alaska to Maine, including the work of several SUNY-Oneonta
faculty members and leading artists in the field. An artist's reception for
the exhibit will be held on Thursday, January 24, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The exhibition will display a broad range of the "art of the book" from
traditional printing and high-end hand-crafted pages and bindings to
one-of-a-kind sculptural books, conceptual books, book installations, and
altered books including deep-fried books.
Under the direction of Tim Sheesley, the SUNY-Oneonta galleries are open
Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. when the College is in session.
More information about the exhibits or the galleries is available from
