ONEONTA, N.Y. -- SUNY College at
Oneonta President Alan B. Donovan announced today that he intends to
retire from his position as the sixth President of the College in
July 2008. He began serving as President in 1988, a position he
accepted after having served as Vice President for Academic Affairs
at Northern Michigan University.
President Donovan and his wife, Annie, intend to reside in the
area and to continue serving the community following his retirement.
One of President Donovan's upcoming projects is his new radio show
on WUOW-FM 104.7, the public-radio affiliate station that serves the
College, City, and Town of Oneonta.

TO: The Campus
Community
FROM: Alan B. Donovan
DATE: September 7, 2007
Next July, 2008, will mark my 20th year at Oneonta. As I look back
on almost two decades, I think of what a privilege it has been to
serve this great institution and to realize how far we have
progressed.
Now, after a good deal of soul searching, I have decided that
personally and institutionally the time has come for me to voyage
onward. Therefore, I have notified our Interim Chancellor and others
that this will be the last academic year of my presidency.
The search process for my successor will soon be under way. And,
although I will not be involved, I feel certain there will be a
carefully chosen and representative campus community search
committee which should begin its work shortly. I fully intend to
serve as President as vigorously and with as much dedication as
ever. The coming year will certainly be one of transition. Yet, I
know also that we have developed a marvelous momentum which will
certainly carry us well through this year and well beyond.
I have often used the metaphor of a voyage in my speeches and
presentations. Most Americans traveled here from the Old World,
Asia, and elsewhere by sail. We have voyaged across this great land
and well into the universe above. Of course, the success of these
travels through time and space depends so much on the strength of
the community members and their striving together to reach that far
shore.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to each of you for journeying
to the wonderful place we know as the College at Oneonta. We did it
together.
