SUNY ONEONTA LEADERS TO RECEIVE AWARDS FROM COUNCIL FOR THE ADVANCEMENT AND SUPPORT OF EDUCATION

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Paul J. Adamo, Vice President for College Advancement at the SUNY College at Oneonta and Executive Director of the College at Oneonta Foundation, and Alan B. Donovan, SUNY Oneonta President Emeritus, have been selected to receive 2009 Achievement Awards by District II of CASE, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Mr. Adamo will receive the Quarter Century Award and Dr. Donovan the Retirement Recognition Award.

The CASE Quarter Century Award is presented in recognition of contributions to the advancement profession by individuals who have served in the field for at least 25 years. The Retirement Recognition Award is presented to recently retired individuals based on outstanding leadership in advancement programs and length of service in the field.

Paul Adamo, a 1981 graduate of the SUNY Oneonta, joined the College in 1993 as Director of College Advancement and was promoted to Vice President in 1997. Alan Donovan retired in 2008 after having served as President of SUNY Oneonta for 20 years.

Together with Oneonta residents Thomas Hughson, Karen Elting, and Kenneth Kellerhouse, all of whom served as Presidents of the College at Oneonta Foundation Board of Directors, Mr. Adamo and Dr. Donovan provided leadership for two highly successful five-year fundraising campaigns. The Campaign For Oneonta raised over $6 million by its conclusion in 1999, and Changing Lives Since 1889 raised over $12 million by its conclusion in 2007.

In the course of the Changing Lives Since 1889 campaign, 63 new scholarships were created. For the past seven years, the College at Oneonta has led all similar SUNY colleges in the percentage of alumni who make a gift to their alma mater. Last year, 17% of SUNY Oneonta alumni made a gift to the College, a rate more than twice as high as the national average for public colleges.

In the past 20 years, the College's endowment has grown from under $2 million to over $25 million as of December 2008. Scholarship awards to students have grown in number from under 10 in 1989 to over 1,000 today and in total value from under $20,000 then to over $1.75 million now.

"We are very proud that we have developed a culture of philanthropy at the College and that we have built an advancement program that has been recognized statewide and nationally," said Paul Adamo. "The CASE awards are a compliment to SUNY Oneonta as an organization, and they reflect the support that we receive from alumni, our campus, and the community," he said.

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education is an international association of education advancement officers and related professionals. CASE District II encompasses over 700 colleges and schools in the mid-Atlantic region from Ontario to the Virgin Islands. The awards will be presented at the CASE District II Awards Gala in Baltimore on March 23.
