SUNY ONEONTA TEAM TO PREMIERE VIDEO ABOUT DECREASING BARRIERS TO EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Last year, a team of faculty members and students at the SUNY College at Oneonta was awarded a grant through the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Campus Action Project (CAP), which was used to create a multi-media project about issues and barriers faced by low-income and minority women attending a rural four-year college. The group will premiere the video created through the grant, "Decreasing Barriers, Planting SEEDS: Success in Education through understanding Equity and Diversity in Students," on Wednesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. in the ballroom of the Hunt College Union. Admission to the event is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.

The video will also be shown in a special early viewing at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 27, in the Red Dragon Theatre of the Hunt Union.

The SUNY Oneonta CAP Team, consisting of 11 minority and low-income students supported by campus project advisors, created the documentary video depicting issues and barriers facing low-income and minority women attending SUNY Oneonta. The student-produced documentary features interviews with students, as well as images of life and obstacles on campus and in the greater community. It also explores ways in which some challenges have been overcome. The video is supplemented by a toolkit that provides additional information about barriers, obstacles, and ways in which to decrease various challenges.

Student members of the SUNY Oneonta CAP team included Katherine Mendoza, Amanda Vasquez, Amber Chapman, Chelsie Steinbacher, Chris Rodriquez, Dania Valdes, Guillermo Reyes, Kasey Scheiner, Katelyn Peters, Sara Gaudioso, and Tara Smith.

Dr. Karen Joest of the Human Ecology Department served as project advisor with Dr. Caridad Souza-Watkins of the Women's and Gender Studies and Africana and Latino Studies Departments serving as co-project advisor. Other members of the team were Student Development Associate Dale Capristo, Health Educator Rebecca Harrington, Coordinator of the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center Robin Nussbaum, and Director of Creative Media Services David Geasey.

Additional campus collaborators included the Office of Student Development, Student Association, Office of Equity and Inclusion, AALANA Mentor Program, and Milne Library.
More information about the project and the video is available from Dr. Joest at (607) 436-2063.
