ONEONTA, N.Y. -- A team of faculty members and students at the
SUNY College at Oneonta has been awarded a grant of $4,200 through the
American Association of University Women (AAUW)
Campus Action Project. The
grant will be used to create a multi-media project about issues and barriers
faced by low-income and minority women attending a rural four-year college.
The SUNY Oneonta CAP team consists of ten minority and low-income
students supported by several members of the College's faculty and staff.
Dr. Karen Joest of the Human Ecology Department will serve as project
advisor with Dr. Caridad Souza-Watkins of the
Africana and Latino Studies
Department serving as co-project advisor. Other members of the team are
Student Development Associate Dale Capristo,
Health Educator Rebecca
Harrington, Coordinator of the
Gender and Sexuality Resource Center Robin
Nussbaum, and Director of Creative Media Services David Geasey.
The SUNY Oneonta students participating in the project are Amanda Vasquez,
Ronmecka McMaster, Heather Adriano, Guillermo Reyes, Kasey Scheiner, Sara
Gaudioso, Tenika Isaacs-Reynolds, Chelsie Steinbacher, Matt Butler, and
Dania Valdes.
The focal point of the project, entitled "Decreasing Barriers, Planting
SEEDS: Success in Education through understanding Equity and Diversity in
Students," will be a 30-minute, student-produced documentary featuring
interviews with students. The documentary will explore life and obstacles on
campus and in the community and ways in which students have overcome some
challenges. The video will be supplemented by a toolkit providing additional
information and specific strategies to overcome barriers.
With support from the Oneonta AAUW
branch, the team plans to distribute the toolkit and video to campus and
community groups. Virginia Pence, Executive Secretary of the Oneonta branch,
serves as the project's AAUW advisor and liaison between the SUNY Oneonta
team and the Oneonta AAUW branch.
