Voluntary System of Accountability

CLA Administration and Sampling Details

The CLA was administered to first-time, first-year students at SUNY Oneonta early in Fall 2008.  For the most part, students were obtained from the College’s first-year seminar course, supplemented by two English composition courses in order to assure an adequate sample size.  The final sample included 123 students whose average total SAT score was 1097, compared to a total average SAT score of 1096 for all first-year students entering the College in Fall 2008.

The CLA was administered to senior students in Spring 2009.  Students were obtained from senior capstone courses and were also solicited by chairpersons from programs that were randomly selected for inclusion.  The final senior sample included 101 students with an average total SAT score of 1076, compared to a total SAT score of 1077 for all graduating seniors.

In order to motivate students to participate and do well in the CLA testing, faculty and staff emphasized the valuable ways in which the assessment data could be used to improve teaching and learning at the College, in particular the general education curriculum.  No other incentives were offered or provided for participation or level of performance.
