October 19, 2009 Memo to Teaching Faculty regarding Influenza A (H1N1/Swine Flu)

10-19-09

To Teaching Faculty,

This update is meant to provide you with current information and to repeat the recommendations that were made earlier this semester.  The College is tracking the cases of flu-like illness among our students and reporting this information to Chancellor Zimpher on a daily basis.  Our total of reported cases since the beginning of the semester is 71.  It is likely that there are other students who are ill and who are missing classes but have not notified the College. Because the Health Center and providers in the community are not testing for H1N1, we cannot say whether these are cases of H1N1. The Office of Student Development will continue to notify you about the students who have reported to the College.

It continues to be important to take all possible steps to prevent a larger outbreak of flu-like illness.  Students who are identified as having symptoms of flu-like illness continue to be encouraged to go home until they have recovered or to isolate themselves in their campus residences.  They should maintain isolation until 7 days after the onset of the first symptom or, if fever has been present, after temperature is normal for 24 hours.

Because it is important for students who have flu-like illness to restrict their contact with others and we are urging them not to attend classes, we should not penalize them for failure to attend classes.  In some cases, students will not be able to provide medical documentation of their illness and we urge you not to require students to provide written excuses for their absences.  If students in your classes appear ill, encourage them to isolate themselves and follow the directives to students on our website, http://www.oneonta.edu.

As the Health Center receives vaccine for seasonal flu and H1N1, students will be informed and encouraged to receive inoculations.
