September 18, 2009 Letter to Parents, Friends and Family of Students, regarding Influenza A (H1N1/Swine Flu)

9-18-09

Dear Parents, Friends, and Families of SUNY Oneonta students,

Although we have no documented cases of the H1N1 flu in this county or on our campus, we are prepared to help students who are affected by the flu. We are following the guidelines from the Center for Disease Control in preparing for a few cases or for a major outbreak of flu on our campus.

We are asking students to be aware of the symptoms of H1N1 flu (not everyone will have all symptoms):

  • Sudden onset of symptoms
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Body ache
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Nasal congestion
  • Cough
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea

Students who have underlying medical conditions, are taking immunosuppressant medications, and women who are pregnant should contact the Health Center or their primary medical care provider as soon as they develop flu-like symptoms.

In order to prevent widespread infection, we ask students who develop flu-like symptoms to isolate themselves from others. We strongly recommend that students go home to recover. We believe this will provide the best environment for recovery and minimize exposure to other students. The college does not have an infirmary or a separate residence facility that could handle large numbers of students needing isolation. Students who become ill while at home for a visit should remain at home until they have recovered.

Students who cannot go home will be asked to isolate themselves in their residence hall room or local residence, refrain from attending classes and campus events, and wear a mask when going to bathrooms that they share with others. The college may require students in residence halls to relocate to minimize exposure to other students. Residential students should contact their residence hall director for making arrangements to get meals.

Students will be responsible for monitoring their symptoms and recovery. They can get masks, thermometers, and additional information from their residence hall or the Health Center. Students whose symptoms get worse and/or develop additional symptoms should contact staff at the Health Center or their primary medical care provider.

Although we are also providing this information to students, we would appreciate your help in making sure that your student is aware of the resources available to them. When we are aware that a student is ill and missing classes, we will notify their instructors. The student will be responsible for working with each instructor to arrange to make up class work that has been missed.
