Why was the foundation
formed?
The Ninash Foundation was formed in memory of Nina J. Malhotra
during 1996. Nina was a pre-kindergarten teacher, a social worker,
and a counselor. While she taught Hindi at the State University of New York at
Oneonta, she
was instrumental in the co-founding and co-directing the SUNY
Intersession and the SUNY Semester in India Program.
Nina's life at SUCO and Oneonta
was dedicated to bringing cultural interchange between diverse
groups and especially between India and the USA. Though Nina's
short life was spent helping members of the Indian family by bringing
them to the USA, educating them into the ways of America, and
finding for them proper employment, she was always interested
in finding ways to educate the poor and forgotten children of
India.
Since in her own life time, she could not get involved directly in assisting the poor children of India to get an education, the Ninash Foundation was formed to incorporate Nina's desire 'to actively support literacy among children throughout the world.'
