FIRST CROSS COUNTRY MEET

NCAA Atlantic Region Championship @ Letchworth State Park (SUNY Geneseo) – Saturday, November 14, 2009

The Red Dragons placed 15th out of 33 teams with 398 points, which tied their best finish ever at the Atlantic Regional.  Their 398 points, however, was their lowest point total ever by 42.  Junior Celia Alterio led the way with a 53rd place finish in a time of 23:41 over the 6K Letchworth State Park course.  Freshman Molly Hassett was next, placing 62nd only 9 seconds back in 23:50.  Sophomore Lauren Brunetto placed 78th in a time of 24:08.  The final four to cross the line for O-State were all freshmen.  Allie DiMura and Lindsay Romaine rounded out the scoring in 104th and 106th with times of 24:46 and 24:48, respectively.  Carolyn Nasr and Pam Ernst were the displacers in 109th and 124th with times of 24:54 and 25:10, respectively.  “I am excited for the future of the women’s program,” commented Head Coach Matt LoPiccolo.  “We return our top eight runners next year, of which there is talent to cultivate.  I want to thank senior Margaret Conlon for teaching the younglings how to run as Red Dragons.”

SUNYAC Championship @ Cortland

The Red Dragons placed 5th out of 9 complete teams with 135 points.  This is an improvement by 83 points from their 8th place team finish just one year ago in 2008.  Sophomore Lauren Brunetto led the way with a 20th place finish in a time of 24:44 over the 6K course.  Junior Celia Alterio was 11 seconds back in 25th place.  The freshmen took the next four spots for O-State as Molly Hassett placed 28th in 25:03.  Lindsay Romaine was 37th in 25:17 and Pam Ernst stepped up to tally the last scoring place in 48th with a time of 26:14.  Allie DiMura was right behind in 49th (26:15) and senior Margaret Conlon placed 51st (26:21) in her last SUNYAC XC Championship.

Saratoga Invitational

The Red Dragons placed 3rd out of 14 teams with 87 points, just ten behind SUNYAC rival Plattsburgh.  Celia Alterio led the way through the heavy rains and giant mud puddles at the historic 5K course at Saratoga State Park.  The junior placed 14th in a personal best time of 18:53.  Sophomore Lauren Brunetto was right behind in 15th in 19:01 while Amanda Schermerhorn quickly followed in 16th place.  Her time of 19:05 set the school record for 5K cross country for freshmen.  Classmates Lindsay Romaine and Molly Hassett finished the scoring in 20th and 22nd places, respectively in times of 19:14 and 19:20.

SUNY Cortland Jack Daniels Invitational – Saturday, October 10, 2009

Oneonta State placed 2nd out of 4 teams with 39 points, behind nationally ranked, SUNY Cortland, who won their own meet with 23 points.  Sophomore Lauren Brunetto led the way with a fourth place finish in a time of 24:29 over the soggy 6K course.  Junior Celia Alterio and freshman Amanda Schermerhorn were right behind in sixth and seventh places respectively, with the same time of 24:37.  Freshmen classmates Lindsay Romaine and Carolyn Nasr finished the scoring in twelfth and fifteenth places respectively, with times of 24:48 and 25:04.

Lehigh University Paul Short Invitational – Friday, October 2, 2009

The Red Dragons were seeded in the middle “Brown” race of three and placed 20th out of 39 teams with 513 points in at the enormous Paul Short Invitational.  Since 2002, when the NCAA started running the 6,000 meter distance for women, Oneonta has had only three women break the 24 minute mark.  Today, the Red Dragons had seven women run between 23:19 and 23:57.  Freshman Amanda Schermerhorn led the way in moving up the entire race and finishing in 77th with a time of 23:19.  Her time is now the second fastest in school history, only behind 2006 NCAA Qualifier, Kaitlin O’Sullivan.  Junior Celia Aterio was only two seconds back in 81st place with a personal best time of 23:21 while sophomore Lauren Brunetto was 96th in 23:31 in her first collegiate 6K.  Freshmen took the next five O-State spots as Molly Hassett and Allie DiMura rounded out the scoring in 128th and 139th places respectively, with times of 23:48 and 23:53.

Oneonta State Airfield Invitational
– Friday, September 18, 2009

The Red Dragons come into their final home meet of the season unranked and came out ahead of the eighth ranked team in the Atlantic Region.  Oneonta placed second out of six teams with 53 points.  Plattsburgh (#6) won with 40 points, while Hamilton (#8) was third with 55.  Junior Celia Alterio and sophomore Lauren Brunetto led the way with both crossing the line in 17:30, good for seventh and eighth places, respectively.  The strong freshmen class followed right behind in rounding out the top seven spots for O-State.  Carolyn Nasr was 11th in 17:37 over the 4.5km Fortin Park course.  Molly Hassett was ten seconds back in 13th place.  Amanda Schermerhorn and Lindsay Romaine crossed in 14th and 15th places, respectively with times of 17:51 and 17:54.  Allie DiMura placed 20th in 18:08 while senior Margaret Conlon ran a huge personal best of 18:23 in placing 25th.  The top five pack time was an impressive 21 seconds.  “We moved exceptionally well the second half of the race,” commented head coach Matt LoPiccolo.  “In the three races thus far, these women have executed everything that has been asked of them, and now they may have just earned themselves a top ten regional ranking.”

Hartwick College Fast Course 5K – Thursday, September 10, 2009

The Red Dragon newcomers ventured across West Street and came away with a sweep win against the Hawks, 15-48.  Freshmen took the top five spots with all breaking 20:00 for 5,000 meters.  Molly Hassett took the lead with 600 meters to go and won the race in 19:08.  Carolyn Nasr held on for second place, nine seconds back.  Amanda Schermerhorn was third in 19:20 with Lindsay Romaine next in 19:36.  Allie DiMura rounded out the scoring in fifth place with a time of 19:46.  All eight Oneonta State finishers ran personal bests.

Oneonta State Early Bird Invitational
– Saturday, September 5, 2009


Oneonta State opened the 2009 season on their home course at Fortin Park.  The Red Dragons dominated in taking seven of the first eight places to score 18 points in outdistancing visiting Oswego and Hartwick.  Junior Celia Alterio took the overall win in a time of 18:02 over the 4.5 kilometer course.  Right behind Alterio was freshman Carolyn Nasr, who ran 18:07 in her debut in a Red Dragon uniform.  Sophomore and XC newcomer, Lauren Brunetto, made her presence felt in finishing fourth, ten seconds back of Nasr.  The next four finishers for the Red Dragons were all freshmen.  Molly Hassett, Amanda Schermerhorn, Lindsay Romaine, and Allie DiMura came in fifth through eighth places in their first collegiate race.
