ECAC Championships @ Springfield College – Thursday-Friday, May 15-16, 2008

Oneonta State placed 46th out of 52 teams with 2 points to complete the 2008 season.  The only medalist of the weekend was Celia Alterio.  The freshman placed 7th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a personal best time of 11:51.62.  Also running a personal best was classmate Connie Belkevich, who placed 14th in the 400 meters in a time of 1:00.25.

NYC Qualifying Challenge @ Icahn Stadium – Saturday, May 10, 2008

In the last qualifying invitational of the year, the Red Dragons extended the season of four more team members.  In the 400 meters, freshman Connie Belkevich and sophomore Kristen Stein finished in ninth and tenth, respectively.  Belkevich crossed the line in a personal best time of 1:00.26 with Stein right behind in 1:00.56.  Both times were good for ECAC qualification.  In the 800 meters, sophomore Amberlyn Mattice won her heat and placed twelfth overall in 2:20.45, hitting the ECAC standard.  In the steeplechase, freshman Celia Alterio placed third in an ECAC time of 11:57.86 while Kaitlyn Keys placed fifth in a time of 12:58.60.  Both women achieved personal bests.  To end the day, freshman Liz Maziejka teamed with Stein, Belkevich, and junior Janine Sacca to run a season’s best time of 4:00.14, which improved their ECAC qualifying time and took home the victory.

The Plattsburgh Cardinals narrowly beat the home team Red Dragons in a combined women’s and men’s team score of 134-129.

SUNYAC Championships @ Cortland – Friday-Saturday, April 25-26, 2008


The Red Dragons placed eighth with 30 points.  Juniors Stephanie Gordon and Janine Sacca led the scoring charge.  Gordon was the highest individual finisher on the day, placing second in the discus with an ECAC qualifying throw of 35.95 meters.  She also placed seventh in the javelin with a mark of 25.57 meters, throwing it for the first time this season.  Sacca ran personal bests in both of 12.67 and 25.76 in the 100 and 200 meters in placing eighth and fourth, respectively.  Both times were ECAC qualifiers.  She also anchored the 4x400 meter to a runner-up finish with 58.8 split.  She teamed with freshman Connie Belkevich and sophomores Kristen Stein and Amberlyn Mattice to run an ECAC qualifying time of 4:02.73.  Earlier in the day, Belkevich and Stein teamed with freshmen Liz Maziejka and Kristan Catanese to place seventh in the 4x100 relay in a time of 52.91.  In the 400 hurdles, Maziejka placed sixth in a personal best and ECAC qualifying time of 1:06.27.  Junior Kaitlyn Keys started the day off Saturday with an eighth place finish in the 3,000 steeplechase in a time 13:13.16.

Cortland Classic – Saturday, April 19, 2008

It was a hot day on the track and the 4x400 relay team of freshman Connie Belkevich, sophomores Kristen Stein and Amberlyn Mattice, and junior Janine Sacca took full advantage.  The quartet placed third behind two teams from Cornell University in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:09.12.  In the 400 meters earlier in the day, Sacca and Belkevich placed third and fourth respectively, in SUNYAC times of 1:01.36 and 1:01.45.  In the 400 hurdles, freshman Liz Maziejka returned from injury and placed second in a SUNYAC qualifying time of 1:09.29.  Junior Kaitlyn Keys started the day off right for the Red Dragons by placing seventh in the steeplechase in a personal best and SUNYAC qualifying time of 12:58.86.  In the hammer throw, sophomore Jillian Bley threw a personal best of 33.74 meters, which qualified her for SUNYAC’s.

The College of New Jersey Invitational – Friday-Saturday, April 11-12, 2008

The Red Dragons went four hours south and found warm weather, conference qualifying times, and a school record.  Junior Janine Sacca, freshman Connie Belkevich, and sophomores Kristen Stein and Amberlyn Mattice teamed for the sprint medley relay to open the day on Saturday.  Sacca and Belkevich ran the opening 200 legs with Stein in the 400 and Mattice anchoring the team home in the 800 leg to establish a new school record of 4:22.36 and place fourth.  Sacca later placed eighth in the 100 dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 12.84 seconds.  Belkevich added a twenty-third place finish in a personal best and SUNYAC time of 13.57.  Stein and Mattice placed seventeenth and eighteenth respectively, in the 400 meters in SUNYAC times of 1:02.27 and 1:02.51.  In the steeplechase, freshman Celia Alterio placed second in a SUNYAC qualifying time of 12:04.45.  Junior Kaitlyn Keys also hit the SUNYAC mark, placing fourth in 13:19.42, good for a personal best.  In the field, junior Stephanie Gordon had a tremendous weekend in three different throwing events.  She started with an eighth place finish in the hammer throw on Friday with a toss of 37.30 meters, good for a personal best and SUNYAC qualifying.  On Saturday, she placed seventh in the shot put with a SUNYAC mark of 10.58 meters.  She ended the weekend with a runner-up finish in the discus.  Her throw of 36.17 meters hit the ECAC standard and missed her own school record by 3cm.  Also in the discus, freshman Alisha Zink placed eighth with a SUNYAC distance of 31.36 meters.  In the shot, sophomore Jillian Bley was ninth with a personal best and SUNYAC throw of 9.90 meters.

Richard Stockton Osprey Open
– Saturday, April 5, 2008

The Red Dragons opened the outdoor season with sunshine and 60 degree weather in New Jersey.  Freshman Celia Alterio picked up her first collegiate win in taking the 1500 meters in a SUNYAC qualifying time of 4:59.48.  Junior Janine Sacca ran personal bests in the 100 and 200 with SUNYAC times of 13.15 and 26.55 which placed her seventh and eleventh, respectively.  Freshman Connie Belkevich hit the SUNYAC marks in both sprints as well, with times of 13.58 and 27.69 in placing eleventh and twenty-second.  Sophomore Kristen Stein placed twenty-first in 200 with a personal best and SUNYAC qualifying time of 27.66.  Classmate Amberlyn Mattice placed thirteenth in the 400 meters with a SUNYAC time of 1:03.43.  Stein, Mattice, and Alterio teamed with freshman Kristan Catanese to end the day with an eighth place finish in the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:17.93.  In the hammer throw, junior Stephanie Gordon placed ninth with a SUNYAC toss of 35.99 meters, which is currently the #2 throw all-time in school history.

ECAC Championships @ Harvard University
– Friday-Saturday, March 7-8, 2008

The Red Dragons wrapped up the 2008 indoor season with a 31st place finish out of 51 teams with 9 points.  Sophomore Amberlyn Mattice was the highest placer, taking 5th in the 800 meters in a personal best time of 2:18.48.  Freshman Celia Alterio placed 7th in the 3,000 meters, breaking her own school record in a time of 10:39.04.  Junior Janine Sacca placed 17th in the 200 in a personal best time of 26.72.  Sophomore Kristen Stein placed 26th in the 500 meters in a season’s best time of 1:21.91.  On Friday, that quartet placed 7th in the distance medley relay in a season’s best time of 12:38.30.  Stein, Mattice, and Sacca teamed with freshman Connie Belkevich to end the weekend in the mile relay.  The foursome placed 8th in a season’s best time of 4:02.74.

NYU Fastrack Invitational @ The NY Armory

In a last chance qualifier meet, the Red Dragons picked up three more ECAC qualifying marks while hitting five personal best times on the day.  Sophomores Kristen Stein and Amberlyn Mattice led the way, running two of the ECAC timed individually.  Stein placed 23rd in the 500 meters in a time of 1:22.18, while Mattice placed 11th in the 800 meters with a personal best time of 2:19.13.  In the 400, junior Janine Sacca and freshman Connie Belkevich ran personal bests, as well.  Sacca’s time of 1:00.90 placed her 42nd while Belkevich’s time of 1:02.05 was good enough for 52nd.  The quartet teamed to end the day in the 4x400 relay.  They were clocked in 4:06.44, improving their previous ECAC qualifying time by over 4 seconds.  Freshman Celia Alterio ran double personal bests as she placed 17th in the mile with a time of 5:17.07 and 35th in the 800 with a time of 2:24.27.  Alterio’s time in the mile and Sacca’s time in the 400 missed ECAC’s by .03 and .06 seconds, respectively.  In the weight throw, sophomore Jillian Bley continued her meet streak of personal bests with a season ending heave of 11.51 meters.

The Red Dragons placed 7th with 33 points.  Sophomore Amberlyn Mattice was the highest individual finisher on the day, placing third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.56.  Freshman Liz Maziejka ran a personal best time of 9.11 in the 55 hurdles to place fourth.  Junior Janine Sacca also took fourth, running a personal best and ECAC qualifying time of 26.78 in the 200 meters.  Freshman Celia Alterio placed fifth in the mile with a time of 5:22.43 while in the shot put, junior Stephanie Gordon also placed fifth with a heave of 10.93 meters.  Mattice, Sacca, and Alterio teamed with sophomore Kristen Stein to place second in the distance medley relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 12:57.22.  To end the day, Maziejka teamed with classmates Connie Belkevich and Kim Loveland and junior Kaitlyn Keys to place eighth in 4x400 relay in a time of 4:23.10.

Cornell University Kane Invitational
– Saturday, February 16, 2008

Freshman Celia Alterio broke the first school record of the season in leading the O-State charge in a pre-SUNYAC tune-up.  Alterio covered 3,000 meters in 10:45.35, bettering Kim Davey’s former record of 11:06.46 set back in February of 2005 at New York’s Amory.  It was over a thirty second personal best for Alterio, as she placed eleventh and qualified for the ECAC Championships in three weeks at Harvard University.  The 4x400 relay team also hit the ECAC standard.  Freshman Liz Maziejka and sophomores Amberlyn Mattice and Kristen Stein were joined by junior Janine Sacca and crossed the line in 4:10.95, good for fifth place.  Earlier in the day, Maziejka placed sixth in 60 hurdles in a SUNYAC qualifying time of 9.72 seconds.  She also hit the SUNYAC mark in the 60 dash, running 8.42 seconds which placed her twelfth.  Mattice hit the SUNYAC standard in the mile run, also placing twelfth in a time of 5:32.36.

Boston University Valentine Invitational
– Friday-Saturday, February 8-9, 2008

Janine Sacca led the onslaught of personal bests on BU’s banked 200 meter track.  The junior ran 26.83 for 200 meters for a PR and her first career individual ECAC qualifying performance.  She also ran a personal best time of 1:01.18 in the 400 meters to improve her SUNYAC qualifying time.  Sophomore Amberlyn Mattice ran a huge PR in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.83, which also hit the ECAC standard.  Freshmen Celia Alterio and Liz Maziejka got in the PR act, as well.  Alterio ran 5:17.80 in the one mile while Maziejka ran 27.49 in the 200 meters.  Both times were good for SUNYAC qualification.  Maziejka also hit the SUNYAC mark in the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.65.  The quartet teamed for the distance medley relay on Saturday and placed twenty-second in an ECAC qualifying time of 12:52.78.  In the throws, junior Stephanie Gordon hit SUNYAC marks in both the shot put and weight throws with tosses of 10.56 and 10.57 meters, respectively.  Sophomore Jillian Bley hit SUNYAC standard in weight with a heave of 10.59 meters.

Three Red Dragons hit the ECAC standard in the 1,000 meters to highlight the day.  Senior Kaitlin O’Sullivan placed second in the event with a time of 3:02.03.  Freshman Celia Alterio caught teammate sophomore Amberlyn Mattice at the line as the duo placed eighth and ninth in times of 3:10.59 and 3:10.64, respectively.  That trio later teamed with freshman Kim Loveland to place seventh in the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 4:21.38.  Junior Janine Sacca placed seventh in the 200 meters in a personal best of 27.24, which improved her SUNYAC qualifying time.  Freshman Liz Maziejka was thirteenth in the same event her own SUNYAC time of 27.67.  Earlier in the day, Maziejka hit another SUNYAC qualifying time, running 7.90 in the 55 dash.  In the field, Jillian Bley qualified for SUNYAC’s in two events, placing eighth and ninth in the shot put and weight throw respectively, with throws of 9.89 and 11.16 meters.  Junior Stephanie Gordon placed fifth in the shot with a season’s best and SUNYAC qualifying throw of 10.90 meters.  Freshman Katie Baker qualified for SUNYAC’s for the first time, tossing the shot 9.84 meters to place ninth.

Oneonta State placed sixth out of 11 teams with 48 points.  Juniors Stephanie Gordon and Janine Sacca led the way with a pair of runner-up finishes.  Gordon threw 10.55 meters in the shot put and improved her SUNYAC qualifying mark.  She also placed fifth in the weight throw with SUNYAC mark of 11.11 meters.  Sacca improved her SUNYAC qualifying time in the 200 meters with a personal best of 27.28 seconds.  She also placed fifth in the 55 dash in a time of 7.83 seconds.  She ended the day by running a blazing 60.3 second leg on the victorious 4x400 relay.  The team of freshman Liz Maziejka, Sacca, freshman Kristan Catanese, and sophomore Amberlyn Mattice hit the ECAC standard with a time of 4:11.38.  Maziejka placed third and eighth in the 55 hurdles and 200 respectively, with SUNYAC times of 9.33 and 27.96 seconds.  Mattice placed eighth in the 800 meters with a SUNYAC time of 2:30.17.  Freshman Celia Alterio placed fifth in the same event with her own SUNYAC time of 2:29.35.  She ended the day by teaming with junior Kaitlyn Keys, sophomore Margaret Conlon, and classmate Kim Loveland for the 4x800 relay, which placed second in a time of 10:40.10.

St. Lawrence University Indoor Classic – Saturday, January 19, 2008

The Red Dragons opened 2008 with a second place finish out of three teams with 77 points.  Janine Sacca led the way with three victories on the day.  The junior set personal bests in the 55 dash and 200 meters, running SUNYAC qualifying times of 7.71 and 27.47, respectively.  She also ran 2nd leg on the winning 4x200 team comprised of freshmen Liz Maziejka, Kristan Catanese, and Celia Alterio.  Alterio held off a hard charging St. Lawrence team at the line to win by .02 seconds in a time of 1:55.20.  Maziejka picked up an individual win for herself in taking the 55 hurdles in a SUNYAC time of 9.20.  She also placed 2nd to Sacca in the 200, with another SUNYAC qualifying time of 28.09.  Senior Kaitlin O’Sullivan won the 500 in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:21.50.  Sophomore Amberlyn Mattice placed 4th in the 400 with a SUNYAC qualifying time of 1:05.11.  Junior Stephanie Gordon placed 2nd in the weight throw with a personal best toss of 12.38 meters, good for SUNYAC qualification.  Sophomore Jillian Bley placed 7th in the same event with a personal best and SUNYAC qualifying throw of 10.82 meters. Gordon also placed 4th in the shot put with a SUNYAC qualifying toss of 10.28 meters.

St. Lawrence University Holiday Relays – Saturday, December 8, 2007

The Red Dragons ended 2007 on a positive in the North Country.  Junior Janine Sacca was the highest placing finisher on the day, as she qualified for SUNYAC’s with a runner-up time of 1:02.55 in the 400 meters.  Freshman Connie Belkevich was right behind in third in a time of 1:02.71.  Sophomore Kristen Stein placed sixth in 1:03.09 with freshman Liz Maziejka finishing thirteenth in 1:04.98.  All four women hit the SUNYAC qualifying standard.  The quartet also joined forces to place second in the 4x200 relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:48.82.  Belkevich and Sacca opened the day by placing forth and seventh, respectively, in the 55 dash in SUNYAC qualifying times of 7.70 and 7.79.  Maziejka started her day by placing forth in the 55 hurdles in a time of 9.28, good enough for her SUNYAC qualifying mark.  In the field, classmate Alison Eagan placed third in the pole vault with a leap of 2.70 meters, which equaled her SUNYAC qualifying mark from last week.  Sophomore Jillian Bley threw a personal best of 10.70 meters in the weight throw to place sixth and improve her SUNYAC qualifying mark.  The Red Dragons return to action in 2008 back at St. Lawrence for the Indoor Classic on January 19th.

Cornell University Relays – Saturday, December 1, 2007

The Red Dragons opened the 2007-2008 indoor season at the Cornell Relays.  Stephanie Gordon led the way with two SUNYAC qualifying performances.  The junior placed 11th in the shot put with a toss of 10.39 meters and placed 14th in the weight throw with a heave of 11.13 meters.  Sophomore Jillian Bley placed 16th in the weight throw, as well, with a SUNYAC qualifying mark of 10.57 meters.  Freshman Alison Eagan made her Red Dragon debut in the pole vault and qualified for SUNYAC’s on her first attempt with a height of 2.70 meters, which placed her 9th.  Junior Janine Sacca and freshman Connie Belkevich placed 43rd and 44th, respectively in the 60 meter dash.  Sacca’s time was 8.48 and Belkevich’s was 8.52, both good for SUNYAC qualification.  Sacca later teamed with sophomore Kristen Stein and freshmen Kristan Catanese and Liz Maziejka to place 10th in the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:20.31.  Belkevich placed 16th in the 300 meters in a time of 43.89, which ranked her 3rd all-time in school history behind All-Americans Ashlee Robertson and Maureen Verdier.
