NCAA Atlantic Region Championship @ St. Lawrence University – Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Oneonta State placed 11th out of 34 teams with 346 points to earn their highest team finish ever at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship.  (The Red Dragons previous best was 14th in 2007.)  Junior Nick Pampena placed 28th overall in a time of 26:35 over the sloppy 8,000 meter course.  In placing in the top 35, Pampena earned All-Region honors, joining 2008 grad Alex Grout as the only men in school history to do so.  Senior Marty Nicholson finished off his steadfast Red Dragon cross country career with a 48th place in a time of 27:06.  Sophomore Tim Greenberg was only 26 seconds back in 69th place with a time of 27:32.  Freshman Matt Laroe and sophomore Frank Pfaffenberger rounded out the scoring in finishing in 100th and 101st places respectively, in times of 28:02 and 28:03.  Sophomore Chuck Hollister was 9 seconds back in 111th with freshman Dan Bruton crossing the line with a time of 28:47, good for 130th place.

ECAC Championship @ Colt State Park (RI) – Saturday, November 8th, 2008

Oneonta State placed 4th out of 48 teams with 146 points, narrowly missing a top 3 plaque by 2 points.  However, two Red Dragons earned All-ECAC honors by placing in the top 15.  Junior Nick Pampena was the overall runner-up in a time of 26:25 over the 8,000 meter course.  Senior Marty Nicholson was 12 seconds back in 4th place with a time of 26:37.  It was the first time in school history that two Red Dragons earned All-ECAC honors in the same race.  Freshman Matt Laroe turned in a strong race, as well, finishing in 25th in a time of 27:32.  Sophomores Tim Greenberg and Frank Pfaffenberger rounded out the scoring in 51st and 65th places, respectively, in times of 28:02 and 28:19.  Freshman Dan Bruton was just in back in 73rd place with a time of 28:26 while sophomore David Goodge placed 104th in 28:54.

SUNYAC Championship @ Letchworth State Park (Geneseo) – Saturday, November 1st, 2008


Oneonta State placed 6th out of 10 teams with 153 points.  Junior Nick Pampena led the way with an 18th place finish, narrowing missing All-SUNYAC honors with a time of 26:07 over the 8,000 meter course.  Senior Marty Nicholson followed in 35th place with a time of 26:48.  Sophomore Frank Pfaffenberger was next in 46th place with a time of 27:07.  High school teammate Matt Laroe was just behind in 49th with a time of 27:13 with sophomore Tim Greenberg 2 seconds back in 50th place to round out the scoring.  Classmate David Goodge ran a personal best in placing 61st with a time of 27:48.

University @ Albany Invitational – Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Oneonta State placed 13th out of 22 teams with 315 points as 15 out of 16 men ran personal best times.  Junior Nick Pampena led the way with a 21st place finish in a time of 25:40, second only in school history to 2008 graduate Alex Grout (25:29).  Senior Marty Nicholson was next in 36th place with a time of 25:56, dipping under the 26:00 mark for the first time in his consistent college career.  Freshman Matt Laroe placed 89th with sophomore Tim Greenberg right behind in 92nd place.  The duo ran times of 26:44 and 26:47, respectively, with Laroe’s time putting him #3 on the all-time freshmen 8k list for Oneonta State behind teammates Frank Pfaffenberger and Nicholson.  Pfaffenberger rounded out the scoring for the Red Dragons with a 96th place finish in 26:53.  O-State will take next weekend off from competition in preparation for the SUNYAC Championships, hosted by Geneseo at Letchworth State Park on November 1st

The Red Dragons had a solid showing in placing eighth out of sixteen teams with 192 points in their 8K of the season.  Setting the bar was junior Nick Pampena finishing in 22nd place with a personal best of 26:29.  Close behind was senior Marty Nicholson in 28th with a time of 26:36.  Next to score was sophomore Frank Pfaffenberger in 38th, with a time of 26:50.  He was followed by freshman Matt Laroe, who debuted in the 8K in a time of 27:14, good for 54th place.  Sophomore Tim Greenberg finished in 85th in a time of 27:53 to round out the scoring for O-State.

Oneonta State Airfield Invitational – Friday, September 19, 2008

The Red Dragons defended their home turf for the final time this season in taking third place out of nine teams with 88 points.  Senior Marty Nicholson led the way with a fourteenth place finish in a time of 19:38 over the 6,000 meter course.  Nicholson's effort broke Alex Grout's school record on the Fortin Park course of 19:51.  Junior Nick Pampena also etched his name ahead of Grout's, finishing right behind Nicholson in a time of 19:42.  Sophomore Frank Pfaffenberger placed twentieth with high school teammate Matt Laroe right behind in twenty-first.  Their times were 20:06 and 20:08, respectively.  Sophomore Tim Greenberg was only ten seconds in back of Laroe in 20:18, good for twenty-third and the last scoring spot.

Hartwick College Fast Course 5K  – Saturday, September 13, 2008

The Oneonta Men hiked across West Street to compete in the Hartwick College Fast Course 5k.  With a team of only underclassmen, the Red Dragons finished second behind the Delhi Broncos.  Freshman Matt Laroe led the way, finishing in third place in a time of 16:34.  Sophomores Chris Sneed and Chuck Hollister finished together in fifth and sixth places in times of 17:17 and 17:18, respectively.  A pair of freshmen rounded out the scoring, as high school teammates Dan Bruton and Brian Baird finished in 17:27 and 17:36, good for tenth and twelfth places.

Oneonta State Early Bird Invitational – Saturday, September 6, 2008

Oneonta State officially opened the season on their home course at Fortin Park.  The Red Dragons placed second out of five teams with 43 points.  Sophomore Frank Pfaffenberger was the runner-up over the 6,000 meter course in a time of 19:54 to lead the way.  Senior Marty Nicholson was next for O-State in eighth place with a time of 20:20.  Freshman Matt Laroe made his Red Dragon debut, finishing in twelfth place in a time of 20:28.  Junior Nick Pampena and sophomore Tim Greenberg were the fourth and fifth scoring runners in fifteenth and nineteenth places respectively, with times of 20:35 and 21:00.  Red Dragon Alumni placed thirtieth, fifty-second, and sixtieth as Alex Grout, Ryan Wells, and Ryan Walter returned to their old stomping grounds.

City Of The Hills Challenge @ Gilbert Lake State Park – Saturday, August 30, 2008

Oneonta State opened the 2008 season with an informal meet with Hartwick College.  The teams were divided into pairs with the top four pairs of times being added together for a total team time.  Oneonta beat Hartwick 1:45:33 to 2:20:36.
