This web site is a brief record of our trip to South Africa and Botswana in September/October 2000. Clicking on most photos will bring up a larger version of the photo.
Pilanesburg is a game reserve northwest of Johannesburg, near Rustenburg. Just outside of the reserve is a Bakubung, a quiet resort catering to people coming to the park to observe the animals. We visited the park on the weekend of September 30/October 1.

The park is home to many different animals -- lions, elephants, white rhinos, zebra, giraffe, impala, warthog, and cape buffalo, among others. We were able to observe all of them at one time or another during our early morning or late afternoon drives through the reserve.

The
last morning in Pilanesburg, three of us -- Smalz, Breitling,
and JCK -- went for a guided walk in the park. The guides attempted
to steer some cape buffalo in our direction, but instructed us
to climb a wild olive tree to be out of the way of the buffalo
should they come too close.
