f80v: while no appreciable change in secondary decoration, there seems to be a shift in miniature style. Note also the historiated initials have not been completed. This was found earlier in the manuscript in the second or third gathering.

f. 104r: rinceaux has changed?

f. 106r

f. 106v: clearly different decorator than the rest of the gathering. Miniatures appear to be by the first hand. This decorator is closely related to the decorator of the Bedford Hours.

f. 107: clearly different decorator and miniaturist from previous folio.

f. 109r: First miniaturist and decorator.

Gathering beginning with 112 looks like it represents another break in decoration and possibly miniaturist. With gatheinrg beginning on f. 120r looks like it is returning to earlier decorator (2nd)

f. 183r (gathering 183-190 has completed decoration, but none of the miniatures have been done.

f. 195v Gathering 191-198 Completed text and rubrics. Decoration has not been begun.

f. 186r: note the completed decoration. Gold has been applied for flourished initials, but the pen flourishes have not been completed. Good demonstration of flourishing as a separate stage in production from the rest of the decoration.

Gathering beginning of f. 199 done in later miniature and decorative style.

f. 214r

Gathering beginning on folio 207r has the two outside and the center bifolia with drawings for the secondary decoration. These drawings look like they were a part of the early stage of production. The third bifolio is completed. This looks like an early stage. Folio 212v Large miniature with Entry into Jerusalem.

Decorator A (notice the importance of symmetry)

Just as the decorator traces from one side of the leaf to the other, it looks like motifs that are symmetrical used tracing as well.

  Christmas
This gathering is a good example of large miniature bifolia being treated separately from text pages. Clearly the borders of the large miniature bifolio is first stage (Decorator) while the remaining bifolia are done in a different style and probably a later stage. Compare the work of decorator of folios 57-62 to the decorator of folio 88. The same plant with gold balls appear in both portions (see folio 61). Different decorator: 57-62

Decorator A returns on f. 72r. Appears to be responsible for the entire gathering. The acanthus curls holds a gold ball. This appears to be the same hand that was responsible for the calendar of the Bedford Hours, see f. 1 illustrated in König, p. 34

The small miniatures are by a lesser hand.

f. 80r: Decorator of f. 32r and Sobrieski Hours returns.

As characteristic of this decorator the penned line of the out lateral lobes of the rinceaux have upturned lines.

The curl of the acanthus does not contain a gold ball. The spine of the acanthus has vertebrae or distinct dots. These are not found in the A Decorator's work.

Historiated initials were left blank.

Close to the decorator of 57-62. This decorator is responsible for the outside bifolio. The same plant detail found on 95 r is found on 59r.

F. 89r close to decorator of 43r but probably different This decorator is responsible for the three inside bifolios (f. 89-94)

On f. 93r the pen line rinceaux in the border and that associated with the initial look different. The pen line of the initial looks close to that of f. 43r. The same thing appears to happen on folio 90v. These are conjugate folios. Doesn't this indicate that the f. 43r artist appeared at the same time or after the f. 89 artist? F. 43r could not be later.

On 94 the pen line of both border and initial are the same. This is true of the remaining leaves by this decorator except for the bifolio 90/93.

f. 106v

Historiated initials are by an earlier better hand like 104 and miniatures in weaker.

Do these stronger initials indicate a terminus ante quem for the borders.? The initial bodies need to have been completed and those would have been done with the rest of the secondary decoration.

f 399-400: Completed text and rubrics; no secondary decoration

f. 401r: Large miniature for St. Vincent:Probably f. 88r decorator (note tree trunks as frame for lower marginal miniatures) but gold balls are a new motif.

402-403 Completed text and rubrics; no evidence of secondary decoration.

f. 404: conjugate of f. 401. Same decorator. Note drawing of eagle in lower border. The rest of the secondary decoration is completed. Was this left for a separate artisan to finish the eagle? It would make sense that this detail was left undone at the time of the death of the Duke in 1435. This suggests a date for this style of decoration (f. 88r decorator) about 1435.

405-406: Completed text and rubrics; no secondary decoration

f. 401r

f. 404r

Unfinished eagle with arms in the lower margin. Rest of secondary decoration, except for pen flourish initials is complete.

f. 407: possibly f. 88r decorator, but different pen-line decoration.

Is f. 408r by a different decorator?

Miniature page decoration of f. 411r same as previous gathering

f. 414 : pretty certainly f. 88r decorator.

The outside bifolio (f. 407/414) looks like it is by the f. 88r decorator while the remaining leaves are done by possibly a new decorator.

f. 416r miniature dedicated to St. Agatha: fairly certainly by the f, 88r decorator. Note how the border decoration is enframe by light line. Is this the first example in the manuscript?

f. 422r: border decoration is again enframed by a light line.

For the borders enframed see Reynolds, the Workship of the Master of the Duke of Bedford, figs 72 and 73 (pp. 459-60)

f. 422r

cw

Has the same decoration set in rectangle like the other gatherings in the sanctorale.

Small miniatures in a finer probably early style.

Reynolds (p. 445, n. 17: belongs with the post-1435 illumination in manner of working through an entire gathering, despite a shield quartered in red and blue, possible as Bedford's field; borders by the same hand in gatherings 55 (fols. 431-438) and 57 (fols. 447-454) with no references to Bedford, suggest the shield was begun in error.

f. 423r: looks like a new border style. More traditional rinceaux with acanthus; probably an early stage of production. In style it comes closest to that found on f. 20v. Note how gold leaves are cusped.

Large miniature on f. 425r has unfinished arms at the bottom. The border decoration is the same as the rest of the gathering.

Is it possible that the saints with English connections were given more of a priority in the making of the book? The St George miniature is decorated by a hand that also did the Cuthbert miniature page.

f. 486r: f. 423r decorator.

The structure of the leaves in the gold ground foliate initials is different from typical Parisian leaves. Compare them to Rouen initials like in Beck, no. 26. Can an argument be made that later portions of the decoration of the manuscript were produced in Rouen?
