CORE CONCEPTS IN EARTH SCIENCE

A Professional Development Workshop and Companion Course for Graduate Credit

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

 

Participants will explore a broad array of Earth Science content from the New York State Physical Setting Core Curriculum with emphasis on examples from New York State. Topics in geology, meteorology and astronomy will be examined through inquiry-based field and laboratory experiences. The workshop is intended for those who desire a deeper foundation in Earth Science content and pedagogical content knowledge. Topics will include physical geology, structural geology, Earth history, geomorphology, modern mapping and remote sensing resources, meteorology and astronomy. Emphasis will be placed on first hand observation and data collection in the field and the use of real-time data. The workshop may be taken for 3 graduate credits through the SUNY College at Oneonta with the payment of appropriate tuition and fees. The course is ESCI 500 Core Concepts in Earth Science. Participants who own GPS units should bring them to the workshop. GPS units will be available for the use of other participants. WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

      

The workshop meets Monday - Friday August 3 - 7, 2009. The daily schedule is generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with occasional evening sessions. The workshop/course will meet for a minimum of 45 hours of instruction.

 

WORKSHOP FEE

 

The fee for the Summer Workshop Core Concepts in Earth Science is $425.00. For participants within the area served by the Catskill Regional Teacher Center, the fee is $250.00. The workshop fee is payable to

TAKING THE WORKSHOP FOR GRADUATE CREDIT

The course is ESCI 500 Core Concepts in Earth Science. The course carries 3 semester hours of graduate credit in Earth Science.

                                                               

Tuition and fees for residents of New York State is $986.55. Tuition and fees are payable to the SUNY College at Oneonta. See the website above for registration form.

 

To enroll for graduate credit, you must complete an application for status as a non-degree graduate student and you must submit a transcript.

Accommodations on the SUNY Oneonta Campus  

 

Dormitory-style lodging with communal baths is available in the college's Morris Conference Center. These rooms feature two twin size beds per room, with carpeting, dressers, chairs, lamps , a phone, a clock and two closets. Pillows, blankets, linens, towels and washcloths are supplied. Men's and women's baths are on separate corridors. Robes and slippers are advisable and you should bring your own soap and shampoo. These rooms are not air conditioned, but guests may bring their own box-style or oscillating (not window) fans and ice chests. Guests may also bring their own TV and cable wire to attach to a free connection. Smoking, pets and weapons of any kind are prohibited. Free laundry facilities are available, but guests must supply their own detergent. There are no elevators in the building. Temporary parking permits must be obtained from the University Police Department which is directly across the street in Alumni Hall.

 

Room rates are $50/night for single occupancy and $65/night for double occupancy. VISA, MasterCard and Discover are accepted.
