Cart 201-02  -  Computer Art I

Fall  2008

Instructor Sven Anderson

Fine Arts 321

Monday Wednesday 8:00AM - 9:50AM

About this course:

This course will be an introduction to basic methods of image making in computer art. In this course you will complete projects in the two dimensional realm of computer art, including, digital paint, photo image editing, drawing, page layout and web design. No prior computer experience is necessary.

Expect:

To be totally lost for the first half of the semester.

To learn an awful lot

To spend many days and nights in the computer lab. most people become addicted and spend most of their waking (and a few sleeping) hours here. You will probably spend a minimum of 16 hours a week (4 in class and 12 outside of class) in the computer art lab.

To be challenged

To have fun

To be active in class

To live here

The Lab:

Is open 7 days a week from around 7AM to 11PM. As a computer art student you can get 24 hour card-key access to this lab. If you will be arriving late at night, you may need to obtain a building permit so UPD will let you into the building.

Grading:

I grade the old fashioned way, you earn it. At this level of computer art I grade almost entirely on effort. There is a strong correlation between time spent on the computer and quality of work so work hard. Everyone else will. Due to the limited number of seats in the lab, the upper levels of computer art are competitive. So, impress me.

Attendance:

I donÕt take roll (the server does) I expect you to attend class and be an active participant in proceedings. This is not done to torture you but to make you learn. I guarantee the more active you are in class the more you will benefit from being there. Your participation will affect your grade.

Supplies you will need:

Paper and pencil, and a few 8x10 sketch books. You will also need to get a stack of CD-R disks and a jewel box for the final project and to back up your files during the semester.

I recommend a Cintiq 21UX Grip Pen ZP501E or 6D Art Pen ZP600 (if you want to use our spiffy new Cintiq tablet displays)

Portable hard drive, I recommend anything with the name Seagate on it. (Firewire is better than USB, make sure Mac compatible)
