STOP SUNY BUDGET CUTS

TAKE ACTION NOW!

Attention Students SUNY has faced over $250 million worth of Budget Cuts and freezes in less than a year and the Student Association fears this will only get worse.  Just because we voted last week doesn’t mean our job is over.  We have to keep on our elected officials and let them know that we don’t agree with cutting SUNY’s budget and that it needs to be restored to what it used to be.

Now is the time to contact our newly elected officials and tell them this.  The Student Association is asking that every student e-mail their State Senator, State Assemblyperson and the Governor’s Office. The Legislature will return to Albany on November 18th.  We need to send out message loud and clear before than.

If you have any questions please email me.

(Just Copy/Paste these messages into an e-mail)

To the State Senator or State Assemblyperson:

Hello my name is (NAME) and I am a (CLASS YEAR) at SUNY Oneonta. Over the last year the Governors Office has either cut or frozen SUNY’s budget by about $250 million. This is completely unacceptable. I am asking you to use your influence in the legislature to bring these cuts and freezes to a halt. If schools are forced to deal with reduced funding, than this will lead to several problems. This will cause a reduction in full-time faculty and the size of classes will increase while the availability to get into those classes will decrease. This will make it much more difficult to graduate on time. It is ridiculous to expect students to continue another semester because they were unable to get into a single class the semester before.

To the Governor's Office:

Hello my name is (NAME) and I am a (CLASS YEAR) at SUNY Oneonta. Over the last year your office has either cut or frozen SUNY’s budget by about $250 million. This is completely unacceptable. I am asking you to bring any further cuts or freezes to a halt and find other state agencies to reduce funding to. SUNY is an investment not an expense. SUNY educates the next generation of New Yorkers, in fact 80% of those who attend SUNY schools decide to live and work in New York after graduation. This protects New York from a dangerous “brain drain.” SUNY has stated that for every dollar in state support that it receives, its campuses generate between six and eight dollars to there respective communities. For some communities even the slightest displacement of funds to their local campus will have dramatic ripple effects in college towns. Please discontinue any cuts to the SUNY system and find different ways to handle New York’s fiscal crisis.
