It was the desire of seventeen diverse womxn to establish an organization that while struggling against the injustices suffered by our gender, make a positive impact on our community and provide its members with a place to voice concerns and opinions freely. On March 15th, 1989, at the University at Albany, the legacy came alive, with the establishment of the first chapter of Ωmega Φhi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Chapter. With this similar vision & strong desire to seek change on their college campus and their community, four radiant womxn established the Oneonta Collective of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. on April 15th, 2016, to continue the everlasting change and grown of this organization.
The historical marginalization of womxn, particularly womxn of color, has had a significant impact on the process by which multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-racial womxn determine educational, economic, social and political capital in American society. In response to this reality, seventeen womxn from various racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds synthesized their passion, commitment and motivation. They foresaw an organization that would unify womxn of color who were dedicated to correcting the injustices that have and continue to affect our communities.
Continuing this envision onto the Oneonta campus, is why we should all adhere with one another in order to overcome the injustices suffered by our gender. We pay tribute to these womxn who have worked towards us receiving our true independence. As sisters of Omega Phi Beta Soroirty, Inc. we will serve and Educate people of diverse backgrounds through sisterhood, leadership, and guidance. Serving as positive role models, we promote unity of all cultures, focus on the empowerment of our gender and raise the standards of excellence in our academic, social, and personal endeavors.
“A beta womxn is a better womxn, not better than the rest but better than she used to be”
