The slam competition is open to the first ten SUNY Oneonta students who sign up at the stage.
The first five Big O’ Poetry Slams this fall serve as qualifiers for the Grand Slam on November 9 to determine the 2012 SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Team.

Aug. 24 Slam #84
Taalam Acey, Balitmore, MD
“You have so, so much inspired me with your Spoken Word" said the legendary Stevie Wonder, while interviewing Taalam Acey, during Wonder’s own birthday celebration in May 2008. Taalam, a child of the Newark Rebellion, was raised by a single mother who was a member of the famed writer and activist Amiri Baraka’s community organization. Taalam was honored to be a guest of Congresswoman Maxine Waters for the Congressional Black Caucus' 2007 & 2008 "Young Gifted and Black" panels. He has shared his work in several countries and approximately one hundred schools of higher education; including the prestigious Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley, where he delivered a lecture on contemporary Spoken Word. Congratulations to Slam winna' Anny Miner (30.0!) and runner up Mary Taibi as last night they both earned a bid to the Grand Slam on November 9th! Sept. 7 Slam #85
Rachel McKibbens, NYC via Rochester, NY
... is the author of Pink Elephant (Cypher Books, 2009) and a New York Foundation For The Arts poetry fellow. She has been on nine consecutive National Poetry Slam teams and is the 2009 Women of the World poetry slam champion. Her poems, short stories and nonfiction have been published in numerous journals and anthologies including World Literature Today, The New York Quarterly, The Evergreen Review, The Nervous Breakdown and The American Poetry Journal. Rebecca "Butterfly" Vaughns, Miami, FL
She's been penning poetry since the age of ten. It was the year of 1997 that she took to stages sharing her words. In 2002, she stepped out on faith to pursue poetry full-time. She's referred to as "DQ"(Dedication Queen) by her peers. Her ability to freestyle poetry leaves audiences captivated, mesmerized and in awe. In nine years, she's released 7 spoken word albums, 3 self-published books of poetry, and has produced 9 staged shows. Her work is appreciated by the likes of Nikki Giovanni, Umar Bin Hassan of The Last Poets, Fantasia, Bruce George, and Betty Wright just to name a few.

Dasha Kelly, Milwaukee, WI
Dasha is founder and director of Still Waters Collective, a Milwaukee-based outreach initiative utilizing the transformative power of the written and spoken word. An HBO Def Poetry alum, Dasha has performed and delivered workshops to writers, youth, educators, co-eds, executives, inmates and artists throughout the U.S. As a poet and novelist, Dasha's writings have appeared in anthologies, text books, magazines and online. Rev. Bill MacMillan, Worcester, MA
...is the Co-founder of the Worcester Poetry Slam & Worcester Poets’ Asylum. He is featured in the documentary film SlamNation and was a member of the 1996 National Poetry Slam Championship Team from Providence. Bill Co-Hosted the 2005 Individual World Poetry Slam Championships in Worcester & the 2000 National Poetry Slam in Providence. His work has appeared in numerous publications including The Boston Globe, The Providence Journal, Worcester Magazine, The Worcester Review & Omnivore Magazine. Bill has featured at colleges, coffeehouses, festivals, clubs, Lollapalooza, a truck stop, and he appeared on the TV show Ghost Hunters. In his day job Bill works with untraceable weaponry. He lives & works in Worcester, MA. His most recent book, Searching for DB Cooper, was released in late 2010.
