At SUNY Oneonta the health of our students is just as important as the education of our students. There
are several offices dedicated to the mission of caring for your mental and physical health - see the descriptions below.
Counseling Center
The primary service offered by the College
Counseling Center is short-term developmental counseling for
individual students on a voluntary basis. Counseling provides
students with a safe place to resolve difficulties and cope with
the multi-dimensional challenges of personal growth. In a counseling
relationship, students can improve self-esteem, adjust to changes,
clarify thinking and values, manage stress, express strong emotions,
change negative habits, grieve a loss, develop assertive skills,
work through family issues, make reasoned decisions, resolve
social dilemmas, or deal with generalized low moods.
College counselors are objective, responsive
listeners and supportive professional educators. When the process
of development is supported and facilitated, students can function
more effectively in their personal, social, and academic lives.
Counseling helps students derive the maximum benefits from the
opportunities presented by the college experience.
The Counseling Center is located in the
Counseling, Health and Wellness Center. Call 436-3368 for more
information or an appointment!
The mission of the Student
Health Center is to provide total quality health care services
to the students of the SUNY College at Oneonta. The Health and Wellness Center
encompasses a unique blend of medical care, health promotion,
health counseling and mental health services for a diverse and
specific population, the students. It is important when delivering
care to this group to promote techniques of empowerment and re-enforce
the idea that the students have the responsibility to make decisions
regarding their health care. Our Health and Wellness Center provides entry
level primary care and plays a major role in terms of early recognition
and intervention, primary and secondary prevention screening,
and if necessary referral to a higher level service.
The Health and Wellness Center is open Monday - Thursday
from 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM, Friday from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, and closed
on weekends. Women's Health and STD Clinics have specific hours,
as noted in the section on Health Center
Services
Students are required to schedule an appointment
before being seen at the Health and Wellness Center. Emergencies will be seen
at once. Walk-ins will be encouraged to make an appointment or,
by choice of the student, will be seen as schedule permits.
Office of Health Education
The Office of Health Education, a division of Student Health Services
at SUNY Oneonta, is dedicated to fostering a campus climate that promotes
low-risk choices, harm reduction, disease prevention and social norming.
Students are encouraged to work toward their optimal wellness through
several interactive educational services offered by the Office of Health
Education and CHOICES peer educators.
The College is committed to ensuring access
to students, regardless of disability. Students with disabilities
should register with the Coordinator of Academic Services for
Students with Disabilities. The office will work with students
who need special help such as elevator keys, accommodations in
testing, or mobility assistance. Referral is made to other services
as needed. The Affirmative Action Officer/Americans with Disabilities
Act Coordinator is available to assist students who may need
to discuss concerns related to their campus living and learning
environment. For more information on services for students with
disabilities, contact Craig
Levins. |
