Letters of Reference
It is your responsibility to solicit letters of reference from college
faculty/staff, previous employers, internship or student teaching
supervisors and/or cooperating agents, and character references.
Non-college personnel should be supplied with a stamped envelope
addressed to the Career Development Center. We encourage you to select
these persons carefully and according to their relevance to your
intended career. You are not required to select certain individuals
(e.g. student teaching supervisors) to write references; however, you
should keep in mind that potential employers may expect to see these
references and ask about them if they are missing.
You may choose to use forms available in the Career Development Center
or have references forwarded on official stationery. By law, you have
the right to review references or waive this right. However, you must
make this choice prior to soliciting references. Confidential material
will NOT be disclosed in any form to registrants.
The Career Development Center recommends a minimum of three references,
since school districts and graduate school typically require three
references. A
maximum of five references is included in each file request. If more than
five references are maintained in the file, you must designate which
five to include for forwarding. You may designate different references
for each request.
Alumni, whose folders have grown over the years, are encouraged to
review the contents of their folder carefully to eliminate outdated
forms and references, and add current material.
Transcripts
Full-time undergraduate and graduate students may request that a copy of
their unofficial transcript be added to the credential folder. Indicate
on the registration form your preference regarding this option. The
Career Development Center will request the transcript on your behalf,
but only upon completion of your degree requirements. The Center cannot
request transcripts for alumni, but will include alumni transcripts if
supplied. Transcripts from other institutions may also be included in
the folder, but must be supplied by the candidate. All transcripts will
be stamped "UNOFFICIAL". If you need an OFFICIAL transcript, for any
reason, you must contact the Office of the Registrar at (607) 436-2531.
Other Material
Candidates may wish to include other material such as teacher
certifications, test scores, or special
licenses in their file. Please consult a staff member if you are considering
providing this information to be put in your file.
