Internships

Internships are a great way to gain related experience! Marketability for full-time employment increases when real world experience compliments academic learning.

There are several resources available through the Career Development Center for students who are researching and preparing to apply for an internship. Students who are interested in obtaining an internship for credit should first talk to their department Faculty Internship Coordinator to find out what the protocol is for their particular area of study.

Though each department has unique requirements to participate in an internship for credit, the college has outlined general requirements. Students must be at leastJunior Status (57 credit hours), have a 2.0 GPA, and have passed the College Writing Exam. For additional information regarding the registration process and fees please contact the Office of the Registrar.

Why should you consider completing an internship:

1)   "Test drive" a career field with little risk.

2)   Apply what you learn in the classroom to the "real world".

3)   In some internships, you may receive compensation for the hours you work to help you pay for education related expenses such as tuition or living expenses.

4)   Gain experience that you can use when interviewing for jobs after graduation.

5)   Forces you to update your resume` and a cover letter, as they are needed to apply for an internship.

6)   Practice your interviewing skills before they really "count".

7)   Enhance your related experience section on your resume`.

8)   Make valuable contacts (networking) in your field, which may help you land a job after graduation.

9)   Employers hire from their internship applicant pool first and use it as their primary recruitment method for entry-level talent. In 2011 67 percent of interns were offered full-time employment (as reported from the NACE Internship and Co-op Survey).

10) Employers reported a 55 percent retention rate of interns five years post internship (as reported from the NACE Internship and Co-op Survey).
