Internships are a great way to gain work experience and can help
with your job search after college. While the Career Development Center does not coordinate internships for students, there are several resources available through the Career Development Center for students who are researching and preparing to apply for an internship. Students who are interested in obtaining an internship should first talk to their academic department to find out what the protocol is for their particular area. Each department is unique. Usually, each department has someone who coordinates internships and is the best resource for information. In general, to participate in an internship, students need to be Junior Status (57 credit hours), have a 2.0 GPA, and have passed the College Writing Exam. Why should you consider completing an internship: 1) "Test drive" a career field with little risk. 2) Apply what you learn in the classroom to the "real world". 3) In some internships, you may receive compensation for the hours you work to help you pay for education related expenses such as tuition or living expenses. 4) Gain experience that you can use when interviewing for jobs after graduation. 5) Forces you to write a resume` and a cover letter, as they are needed to apply for an internship. 6) Practice your interviewing skills before they really "count".7) Build your experience section on your resume`. 8) Make valuable contacts (networking) in your field, which may help you land a job after graduation. 9) Employers hire from their internship applicant pool first and use it as their primary recruitment method for entry-level talent. 10) Employers reported 61.9 percent of their college hires had internship experience (as reported from a NACE 2005 Experiental Education Survey). |
