Introduction
This is an effort by the Council of Chairs to present some advice for chairs both present and future. Rather than a “Manual” as the title suggests, we consider this a resource of advice taken from our own experiences in performing the job of department chair. It’s intended to be an informal discourse on “how to do it.” Please take note that some of the advice presented here will not necessarily work for all chairs in all situations. Use your discretion in applying this document and its contents.
Also, as times and College policies change, what is written here may become obsolete. Thus, the advice must be constantly changing. Please be sure you have the most recent version (clear your cache or hit the “reload” button on your browser). The Council of Chairs will revise this website as often as we can.
In monitoring for accuracy, there may be a time lag in correcting errors. Please use caution and double-check the advice you find here against the official Faculty Handbook.
