Class NotesSpring 2006HALF CENTURY CLUB – CLASSES OF 1955 AND EARLIER – WE WELCOME YOU BACK TO REUNION WEEKEND 2006! 1940 Mildred Dann Allan is pleased to report that she has three great-grandchildren and another on the way. Arda Whittaker Crane says she is enjoying retirement! CLASS OF 1946 – It’s Your 60th Reunion! 1946 Carolyn Hansen Hinman writes that the members of the Class of 1946 were a healthy and hardy bunch when they marched away from Oneonta to educate the next generation. She hopes that her classmates have thought about returning to campus for their 60th reunion in June and asking a family member or friend to travel with them. CLASS OF 1951 – It’s Your 55th Reunion! 1954 Marian Plumb Ricker Hamlin is enjoying retirement. She enjoys Dixieland music on land or sea. Dorothy Malloy Markey is still working. She travels with her sisters, Doris and Kate. Virginia Davis McMorris volunteers for the Lake George Opera, teaches the AARP Safe Driving course, and sings soprano with the 100-member Battenkill Chorale. She enjoys staying in touch with her dear friends from the classes of 1954 and 1955. 1955 Lona Christian Bailey and her husband have retired and returned to Franklin after 26 years in the deep south. They have built a solar energy cabin and live near their son and daughter and their families. They spend time in Daphne, AL, between January and May. Their oldest son and his family live in West Bengal, India. Betty Jane Shove Lyman writes of her family legacy at the College beginning with her grandfather, John E. Frederick ’01, who graduated from Oneonta Normal School and served as Superintendent of Schools for Otsego County. John’s daughter, Mary Avis Frederick ’26 Shove, graduated from Oneonta Normal School, went on to Albany College, and taught in Portlandville. John’s daughter, Anna Louise Frederick ’42 Brooks, graduated from Oneonta State Teachers College in its first year as a State Teachers College. Betty, who was a student when the new Home Economics Building opened in 1954, taught home economics at Madison, NY. John’s great-granddaughter, Sara Jane Lyman ’79 Pickett, graduated with a degree in home economics from the SUNY College at Oneonta and began her career with the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Oneonta. Betty also wants to thank all who had a part in her 50th reunion in June. To see roommates from 50 years ago, so many other friends, and all the improvements on campus was wonderful. She enjoyed the special gifts that she and her classmates received, especially the pictures, and being in Reflections was great! CLASS OF 1956 - It’s Your 50th Reunion! 1956 Pat Connelly McCarthy has been retired for 10 years and is living in Adrian, MI. Her husband, Tom, passed away just short of their 38th wedding anniversary. She has great support from her children and grandchildren. Dorothy Danusiar Willey is active in Rosary, card parties, and committees. She has traveled to Mexico and Italy. She is the TOPS local and Albany regional area co-leader. Dorothy participated in seven craft fairs featuring many handmade items. She enjoys weekly yoga, tai chi, and country line dancing. 1959 Cramer and Barbara Blessing Harrington continue to share time between their homes in Smithtown and Jupiter, FL. They are the proud parents of five children and 14 grandchildren. CLASS OF 1961 – It’s Your 45th Reunion! 1961 Ann Pontrelli Murray remarried on October 8 to Robert Yow. She is retired and enjoying her new home and friends in Carolina Shores, NC. Ann and Robert have nine grandchildren between them and love visiting and babysitting them. 1962 Walter Debus was 72 in March. He is still working as a substitute teacher at Proctor High School in Utica. 1963 Helen Hethy Mulvihill became a first-time grandmother to Liam Robert Andrew Congdon on August 27. 1965 Anita Trautmann Bodak enjoyed visiting with so many classmates at her 40th reunion and said it was tremendous! She wants to thank Bill and Cynthia Jachmich ’66 Goertemoeller for the wonderful party and her classmates who traveled even further than she did. Anita also says many thanks to the Office of Alumni Affairs for helping make the 40th reunion a resounding success and Christine Tkahuk Botz for driving Sandy Snell Shydo and her to the reunion. David Truscott has retired as a mathematics professor at SUNY-Delhi after a 35-year career. He is the mayor of the Village of Delhi and is involved in many other civic, family, and personal interests. CLASS OF 1966 – It’s Your 40th Reunion! 1966 Karen Wojcik-Hess has retired after a 29-year career as an elementary teacher. She is presently a realtor in the Capital District. 1967 Sharon Wakefield Carpenter retired after 35 years as a kindergarten teacher. She found her first year of retirement a challenge but is enjoying her second year much more. She has found lots of time to travel and sleep late, and she enjoys not knowing or caring the time of day or day of the week! Alfred Liotta recently joined the Greenwich Public Schools in CT. He will also open an office with a psychologist in White Plains for psychotherapy. Carol Schneller Powell will retire in June after 11 years as a home mom and 25 years teaching social studies at RHAM High School in Hebron, CT. Carol thanks the College for an excellent background. Nicola Livengood Schreiner retired in June 2001 after teaching kindergarten in Newark Valley. She loved teaching but is now enjoying the retirement phase of her life. Jamie Ross Seacord and her husband, Donald, are retired and are traveling a great deal and volunteering with the National Parks Service. They have worked in the Great Smokey Mountains in Tennessee; Cape Hatteras, NC; Sleeping Bear Dune, MI; and Badlands, SD. They hope to head to Alaska this year. 1968 Nancy Papagno retired, moved from Boston to the Providence, RI, area, and completely gutted her “new” home. She would welcome any Oneonta contact at gemini.nancy@cox.net. 1969 Bryan Lambe was recently appointed Special Assistant to the General Manager of the New York Mets. Bryan joined the Mets organization last year as the Coordinator of Professional Scouting. Prior to joining the Mets, he was the Special Assistant to the General Manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2000-2005. He was with the Texas Rangers as a national cross-checker and major league scout from 1985-2000. From 1980-1985, he was an area scout and regional supervisor with the Major League Scouting Bureau. Bryan played in the Detroit Tigers farm system from 1970-1976 and coached in Detroit’s minor league system in 1977-1978. Bryan was inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame at its inaugural induction ceremony in October 1999. Joan Chrzanowski Noonan is the proud grandmother of Emma Jane, who arrived October 21. Margaret Sloan Wolff was featured in the weekly column “Shop Talk” in The Daily Star in January. “Shop Talk” features a locally owned and operated business. Margaret owns and operates Heartworks Quilt and Fabrics, a quilting supply store in Fly Creek. She is one of the largest suppliers of quilting materials in the area and in some cases the country. Her love of fabric, major in home economics, teaching experience, and experience working at Bresee’s Department Store during college have made her business very successful. Howard and Karen Gartner ’72 Houck reside in Ballston Spa. Karen is still teaching Regents earth science, and Howard is a retired middle school science teacher. Howard does ski patrols, collects old John Deere tractors, and smiles a lot. 1970 Dorothy Brochon Krause is a member of the Board of Directors for the Huntington Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society. She invites you to check out the Beaux Arts structure at www.huntingtonlighthouse.org and take one of the tours this summer. Erica Sundberg Gilliam doesn’t know how she ever had time to teach kindergarten for 22 years. She currently does volunteer work for JL Richmond, sings in the choir, and is president of New Virginian’s. Erica says that Richmond, VA, is a great stopping-off place, and she would love to see some of her ACE buds. Patricia O’Brien retired in June 2003 and loves retirement! She is doing a lot of volunteer work at a local hospital and is a tutor through the Literacy Volunteers Program in Troy. Marie Barnaba Truillo retired from the Binghamton City School District after 35 years of teaching. She is currently a Lia Sophia jewelry advisor. CLASS OF 1971 – It’s your 35th Reunion! 1971 Susan Hebert Miosek retired from Cooperstown Central School in June after 30 years of teaching. She became a grandmother in May. She is looking forward to restructuring her free time. Frances Klecak Zinna retired from Patchogue-Medford Public Schools after 33 years as an elementary school teacher in June 2005. 1972 Wendy Wietz Heffer retired from West Irondequoit Central School as English supervisor in July. She has two sons, Devon, who lives in Las Vegas, and Ross, who was married in June and lives in Washington, DC. Judy Cohen Stellman has a degree in occupational therapy, owns two horses, and works as a hippotherapist, combining horseback riding with occupational therapy. Steven Touger recently joined Investment Technology Group, Inc., in New York, as Vice President – Taxation. Steven worked as a CPA at Anchin, Block & Anchin LLP, where ITG was his client before the group offered him a position. He lives with his wife, Gloria, and son, Ryan, in Norwalk, CT. 1973 Albert Clune is working full-time as a senior attorney for New York State Office of Children and Family Services, having first worked for them as a special education teacher. Albert is also in private practice part-time and serves as Town Justice for the Town of Unadilla. When he retires from state service, he hopes to return to teaching. Susan Kalgren Marquart retired this year after 25 years as an insurance claims adjuster. She enjoys day trips to Cape May and New York City. Susan and her husband, Andy, recently celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary. Linda Abildness Thompson is teaching middle school art after teaching secondary science for 30 years! She became dual certified at the beginning of her career in education, thanks to the foundation built as an undergraduate at Oneonta. 1974 Debra Sue Heidt-Dunwell was listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 2004-2005. Tim Keegan is in his 30th year of teaching elementary school in Schenectady. For 20 years, Tim was a track and cross country coach for Schenectady High School. Joe and Diane Frisch McGovern reside in Burnt Hills. Diane is teaching second grade after many years in kindergarten. Joe is also teaching second grade and is a part-time real estate agent. Their son, Ryan, lives in Manhattan and works for JP Morgan. Their daughter, Heather ’04, teaches at Half Hollow Hills School District. 1975 Patricia Leo has been working for Orange County, NY, for 30 years as a senior probation officer. CLASS OF 1976 – It’s Your 30th Reunion! 1976 Steven Beck lives with his daughter, Megan, in Staten Island. He is an executive with a government agency that helps the poor and elderly population – an extremely rewarding job. Steven also continues to pursue a second career in acting, something that he has always wanted to do, and recently had a small role in an independent film that is coming out in April. His daughter, Sophia, was born February 3, 2005. He also has two step-children, Stephanie and Philip. Lynn DeVoe Darragh Onken is Senior Director of Organizational Development at San Juan College in Farmington, NM. Maryjean Dorn Mazzafro says that having her own daughter in college brings back a lot of memories from Oneonta! 1977 Nancy Matta has been named to the 2005 Financial Advisor Hall of Fame by Research magazine, a professional journal in the financial services industry. Nancy was honored for her work as First Vice President of Investments at Merrill Lynch in New York City. The December issue of Research includes a feature article of Nancy, who studied psychology as an undergraduate at the College. Following her graduation, she began working in financial planning while employed at an insurance company. Nancy joined Merrill Lynch in 1980, and she now manages over $210 million in assets. She holds certifications as a financial planner and an investment management analyst. In her work at Merrill Lynch, she manages accounts that average from $2.5 to $3 million. Nancy also serves as a spokesperson for Merrill Lynch’s Women’s Business Development Initiative and is the national Hispanic representative to the firm’s Diversity Advisory Council to Senior Management. She supports a number of non-profit agencies including Catholic Charities, The Hunger Project, Mary Louis Academy, and the YMCA. Donald Price is still living in Houston, TX, and working for URS. He enjoys golfing, scuba diving, and fly fishing for trout in Montana when time allows. 1978 Barbara Keele Abbey is teaching seventh grade in Raleigh, NC. She works with another Oneonta alumnus. Barbara is the mother of 17-year-old identical twin girls. She asks other Oneonta alumni to please keep in touch! Karen Neumann Hoffer had the opportunity to return to campus a few times this past fall as her son is now a student at the College. He plays on the men’s soccer team. Karen says she has attended more games this fall than she did as a student. She also enjoyed seeing all the improvements on campus and says to keep up the good work! Robin Inselman Sauerhaft is enjoying being a stay-at-home mom to her 4˝-year-old daughter after more than 20 years of working as Golf magazine’s creative services manager. Robin’s motto is “you’re never too old!” She would love to hear from old friends at thesowies@aol.com. Pamela Lucas Weiner and her husband, Alan, are living in Arlington, TX. Their son, Scott, is attending the University of Pittsburgh. Pam is an avid sweepstakes hobbyist. Her latest grand prize was an all-expenses-paid trip for four to Chicago for Game 2 of the 2005 World Series, where she threw out the ceremonial first pitch. 1979 Julie Gross Boice received her MBA in Accounting from SUNY-New Paltz in May 2005. She is currently teaching part-time at Ulster County Community College and tutoring students in business courses. She hopes to get a full-time position in the future. Mike Holober is a jazz pianist and composer, and he has been playing all over the world. He is on 35 CDs as a sideman, three as a leader. His compositions are also being performed extensively. In June, he toured Venezuela as a culture-connect envoy for the US State Department. His new CD, Wish List, was recently released. 1980 Catherine Kos Danowski and her husband, Robert, have been married for 19 years and reside in Manorville. Their daughter, Melissa, is in seventh grade and was a finalist in the Miss NY Pre-Teen Program. Catherine has been teaching English for 21 years at Miller Place High School. Jeffrey Greenberg lives in Rockland County with his wife and two children. He works for Chubb Insurance Company in NYC. Mark Lentini chaired the podiatry program for Albany Medical Center’s south clinical campus in January. Richard Monkman and his wife, Diane, reside in Clinton, ME, and have three children: Anneliese, Samuel, and Catherine. Since his graduation from the College, Richard received his MA in English Literature from Drew University in 1985, 7-12 teaching certification from Northeastern University in 1994, and his CADD certificate from Kennebec Valley Community College in 2003. Kristen Sikora Saunders and her husband, Steve, reside in Atlanta, GA. She has worked for IBM for 25 years. They enjoy weekends in their cabin in the north Georgia mountains. CLASS OF 1981 – It’s Your 25th Reunion! 1981 Suzanne Eckler Ehl and her husband, Alan, have been married for 15 years. She has worked as a nutritionist for the Suffolk County WIC Program for 17 years. Suzanne has two children, Kaitlin and Kevin, who keep her on the go with their involvement in sports, scouts, and music. She also has a step-son, John, who works as a carpenter. Suzanne says she can honestly say they are never home! Fran Fishman Giameo and her husband, Steve, have been married for 15 years. She has been the children’s librarian at her local library for the past six years. Her son, Scott, earned his black belt in karate and was elected vice president of the student council. Fran is looking forward to Reunion Weekend 2006 and hopes to see old friends for their 25th reunion. 1982 Lisa Edelstein Goldberg is happily living in Bellmore with her three children. Her oldest, Robyn, is completing her first year at Tufts University in Boston. Lisa is an elementary Spanish teacher. She would love to hear from old friends at goldpunim@aol.com. James Zachos and Terrence Quinn will be taking part in the 2006-2007 Joint Oceanographic Institution's Distinguished Lecturer Series. The Distinguished Lecturer Series brings the results of scientific ocean-drilling program research to students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as the wider geosciences community. Jim is a professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Terry is professor in the College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg. While on sabbatical, he is a distinguished visitor at the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Along with Eric Tappa ’81, Jim and Terry are the sponsors of the QTZ Scholarship, which is awarded to outstanding Oneonta students who major in any geology, water resources, or earth science. 1984 William Reiss and his wife, Bonnie, have a 3-year-old daughter, Sarah. Bonnie is completing her PhD in Plant Genetics at Rutgers University. They reside in Fords, NJ. CLASS OF 1986 – It’s Your 20th Reunion! 1986 Jackie Hull looks forward to seeing all of her former classmates at their 20th reunion in June. She will be attending with her husband, Jim Grundhoffer, and their children, Thomas and Sarah. 1987 With great sadness, George Pieri announces the passing of his friend, Al Chiuchiolo, on December 28. Al was a decorated Suffolk County police officer. He leaves behind his wife, Susan, and two young sons, Matthew and Nicholas. Friends of Al held a fundraiser on March 11 at the Knights of Columbus in Rocky Point to help ease the burden on Al’s family. She has a son, Kelsey, who is five. Meredith Rauch-Broxmeyer and her husband, Brian, are excited to announce the birth of their first child, Hannah Emily, on August 31. They are living in North Bellmore. Meredith is an elementary school staff developer/math coach in Floral Park. She would love to her from old college friends at TeachKidsMAB@aol.com. 1989 Kim Sager-Goldhirsch received the New York State Middle Level Advisor of the Year Award on November 22. CLASS OF 1991 – It’s Your 15th Reunion! 1991 Elizabeth Hall Roalstad and her husband, Andy, are pleased to announce the birth of their second daughter, Catherine (Cate) Anne, on December 1. She joins her big sister, Mary. Beth is the Director of Advocacy and Community Leadership for Project WISE: A Women’s Initiative for Service and Empowerment based in Denver, CO. She received her MSW from the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work in 2000. 1992 Maryellen Deery Sasaguay has been an ESL teacher in Peekskill for five years. Maryellen and her husband, Manny, reside in Dutchess County with their two children, Christopher and Brittney. Jennifer Platt was awarded the 2005 Emmy for outstanding spot news coverage by the New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. This is her second Emmy honor, the first coming in 2004 for general news photography. She continues to work as a photojournalist for Boston’s Fox affiliate, WFXT-TV. 1993 Amy Fried Schombs and her husband, Steven, are happy to announce the birth of their third child, Evan Michael, on January 14, 2005. Evan joins his sister and brother, Cara and Ian. No one can get him to laugh the way his big sister, Lindsey, can! Kim is fortunate to be home with her children–having “two under two” was a lot of work but very rewarding to watch their relationship grow. Aubrey and Kim bought a home north of New York City, where Aubrey owns an architectural metal and glass company. Fred Krone is in Louisiana helping to clean up after last season’s hurricanes. He is overwhelmed by a compelling need to help all those affected by these disasters, and he says it has been quite rewarding to see the looks on people’s faces when a task has been completed. Fred speaks often of his experiences at Oneonta and boasts of the quality of the education he received. He has learned many new skills during his time in Louisiana, and he could not have accomplished so much without the background he received at Oneonta. 1999 Johnny and Noelle Quinn Brown would like to announce the birth of their two sons, Christopher Dale in August 2003 and Matthew Logan in August 2004. They would also like to say hello to all of their friends and wish them a happy, healthy 2006. Heather Murray and Michael Mercorella celebrated their marriage on September 24 at the Miller Place Inn. Oneonta friends in attendance were Seth ’98 and Lucia Litke Brown, Traci Brugar Scofield, and Odessa Ottavio ’00. Heather is a vendor relations coordinator for ADI in Melville. Michael is a police officer with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The couple resides in Babylon. 2000 Jennifer Ringwald Dunn and her husband, Tory, are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Kerrisa Rose, on October 7. Peter Russo and Lorna Leitman ’01 are pleased to announce that they became engaged in December. Peter and Lorna met at the College and have been together for six years. Laura is an art teacher at Attica High School and is due to receive tenure. Rie Yamakawa Yoder and her husband, Bill, celebrated their marriage on November 3 in Maui, HI, at Kaahumanu Church in Wailuku. They greeted 40 guests from Japan and the mainland at the SeaWatch Restaurant in Wailea. Rie is a member of the Oneonta Alumni Association Board of Directors. CLASS OF 2001 – It’s your 5th Reunion! 2001 Nicole Torchia Hildenbrand and her husband, Marc, celebrated their first wedding anniversary in July. Nicole is a fourth and fifth grade special education teacher at Meagher School in the Kingston City School District. Nicole and Marc would love to hear from Oneonta friends at Torchia@webjogger.net. 2002 Deborah Kilpatrick Landry and her husband, Jeff, celebrated their July 23 wedding at College Camp. They enjoyed a honeymoon trip to Tulum, Mexico. Debbie is a lead programmer and analyst in Administrative Computer Services at the College. Jeff is employed by ONC BOCES as a microcomputer specialist. Jason Nappi is the weekend meteorologist for WETM-18 Storm Team in Elmira. Prior to WETM, Jason interned at WCBS-TV in New York during the summer of 2001. After graduation, Jason was hired by WPIX-TV as a freelance weather producer. He enjoys weightlifting, ice hockey, roller hockey, baseball, football, visiting his family, and cooking homemade pizza. Rachel Cohen Shrome and her husband, Nicholas, are expecting their first child in June. They reside in Galway. 2003 Kimberly Gorrell Burkhart and her husband, Jake, are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Jacob Michael, on May 9. They reside in Conrad, MT, on the Rocky Mountain front. Jake is a rancher, and Kimberly is taking time off from teaching to raise their new son. Darcy Veeder is pleased to announce her engagement to Daniel Brunick on October 15 at the home opener of the Albany River Rats in the Pepsi Arena, where Darcy works. Daniel is an explosive ordinance disposal technician with the US Army. 2004 Nicole Realmuto is transitioning well from college and is hoping everyone is happy and healthy. Brad Menard was married June 11 to Tiffany Scott, a 2005 graduate of Hartwick College. Brad will be graduating with his master’s from Iowa State University in May. Stephanie Santos became a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild by being employed as an extra in War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise. She plans to relocate to California in the near future. Andrew Kozak has recently been hired at KSNW-TV, the NBC affiliate in Wichita, KS, as an on-air meteorologist. After graduation, Andrew worked at KTWO-TV, the ABC affiliate in Casper, WY. 2005 Amanda Guldenstern has accepted a full-time position as promotions assistant at Albany Broadcasting. As part of her duties, Amanda will be responsible for scheduling all remote coordinators to remotes and organizing the department with the promotion directors. Audra Hendrickson Prentice and her husband, Joshua, were married on November 19 in New Berlin. Jennifer Poole ’06 served as bridesmaid. Beth Mason attended the celebration. The couple resides in La Maddalena, Italy, where Joshua is currently stationed with the US Navy.
